1987 Mercedes 190D 5-cyl Turbodiesel

This is quite a rare car. It has been a while since I seen one on sale. I have not driven one, and wonder how it compares to the earlier 190Ds amd the 1987 300D. Anybody on the forum has one, and care to share how it drives, mpg, repair records, and problematic areas.

This car has been re-listed. I seriously considered it the last time around (week and a half or so ago) but decided to purchace an 85, n/a, 2.2 instead. Part of the reason I bought the 85 was the tenor of the add for the 87.
It brought $3,500 plus the sellers fees (read the fine print) which put the final price close to 4K; IMHO a lot to pay for something in the "pig in a poke" catagory.

I also watched it sell a week ago. It might be a nice car, a bit of rust around the wheelwells and likely around the jack-tubes soon (if not already). Typical rust-belt car unfortunately.

I wouldn't buy it without a personal inspection, if someone on this list lives nearby that might be an option.

It is a relatively rare car, 49-state in '87 only. Easiest to spot by the vents in the right fender for air intake.

I have one, love the car. Never liked 190s (W201) AT ALL, have long been a 124 fan and felt the 201 was too small/cheap to be a M-B. That was largely because of the early ones, 4-banger gas and rust, not very impressive IMO. So the fact that I stumbled across a 190DT, drove it, love it, kind of surprised me. It rides nice, handles well, and has pretty good acceleration. All-in-all it is definately worthy of the M-B nameplates. Also '87 has the bigger brakes, ABS standard on the DT, the single-wiper, flush-headlamps, and other updates to the more modern models.

My combined highway/city mileage has so far been 30mpg, highway running fairly hard (including the occasional run to 120 or so to clean her out) has netted me 33-35 depending on load and speed.

This one might be a little needy, but as I have found most parts are shared with rows of used-up gas 190s in junkyards, my parts bills have been cheap. Also, I like the black.

30MPG average is what mine get too (no turbo). I like small vehicles, the 190D was a no-brainer for me.

What state are you in?
Ah... a 5-speed, flywheel, slave, and pedals would be sweet.

Nice people

I have a 87 turbo with over 300,00 miles on the odo- runs SUPER even though I'm waiting until spring to fix it- needs brakes, exhaust (very expensive!) and has a broken injector line. My wife drove this car 2 WEEKS running on 4 cylinders. I drove it to the store and I noticed a drop in power-- thought it was fuel filters or something until I open the hood and saw fuel seeping near the injector. Tough little car. Also my car is troubled with the typical 201 chassis HVAC problems. The heat is on HIGH all the time. When running well this car is like a little jet- I've toasted my share of 5.0 mustangs in traffic light drag races!!!! I've pulled off 38 MPGs mostly on the highway. But I admit I'm a 123 junkie- so my 85 is still my favorite.

BTW-- the people that are listing this '87 190D are okay Ebayers. My wife bought her '92 Ford Aerostar from them last April and they are fair and honest and the truck has been good thus far. Drove it from PA back to CT without problems.

I have a '93 Aerostar in my driveway with a blown engine- if only I can figure out how to put my N/A engine out of my '79 in that..... I'm dreaming---

My buddy has one that he loves- or at least used to until it developed cooling system problems. It has been sitting on my property for a month. I wouldn't want to think about what a new head will cost him....

In SW Michigan.

I've started to stockpile the parts I figure I'll possibly need some day, pulled pretty much the entire HVAC electricals just in case, ... used the aux pump (from a 2.6 gas), CCU, and blower switch already. My old CCU works fine, but the aux pump circuit is toast (pump had seized), runs everything else fine, figure it will make a good swap-n-test unit if I run into anyone who needs to borrow it.

The 2.6 has the dual cooling fans and other things from the TD, I still haven't figured out what is different to give the diesel car the extra 1" of front-end length though. Chances are not good that I'll ever stumble across a junked 190DT so this'll do.

Now if I can find a pair of perfect heated leather palomino seats, ... can't believe that they offered it without bun-warmers, so what if it was sold in FL?

Anyway, if you ever need photos of anything to figure things out let me know. I'm not fast, but I can get them if you bug me enough ;~)

Personally I'm pretty happy with the automatic, ... as long as it works okay. I don't know what interchanges with it, I can get an '87 2.6-gas trans cheap but the used-parts cross-reference shows only the 190DT trans will interchange so I'm not sure whether it is just the throttle-body and torque-converter. The 2.6 has the "ECON/SPORT" switch so ???
