Help Help Help (huge Anti-freeze Leak)

omg! I just got the car(81 td) back yesterday where my mechanic changed the glow plugs and the starter for $400. This morning, I noticed a noticeably larger amount of smoke coming out the back. I ignored it temporarily, and conitued to school. After about 5 minutes of driving, I actually noticed smoke dissipating on the outskirts of my hood. WTF!! As i pulled into school, mind you this is in front of about 500 people , the hood is smothered in excessive smoke. I couldnt even see 5 ft. in front of me. OMG! I knew something was wrong, but I didnt think about it until afterschool today. So, afterschool, I start the car up, no smoke , or any other peculiar problems. So as i start leaving school (after about a 5 minute warm-up), i notice the smoke seeping out of my hood again. ****! I rush home waiting to see wtf is wrong with my car...I immediately get out, open the hood, and wait for the smoke to clear. I looked around for something unusual but i couldn't find anything(apparentely im not very observant when im pissed ). I walk inside dismayed of the current situation of my car and my mom comes in my room and tells me that she found a huge pile of anti-freeze where i parked my car that morning. WTF MOM1!1!! I go back out, look at the anti-freeze tank, and sure enough, it was completely empty. I filled it up, and parked it on the grass. After that 30 some odd seconds, I opened the smoking hood up and it was empty again!!!WTF!!! but this time there was something sizzling furiously to the right left of my oil filter(I think). I'll try to post some pics once the rain clears up a little. Thanks for reading this, and I would really appreciate your adivce.

Cliffs - anti-freeze tank has a huge leak. Most likely somewhere near the end of the anti-freeze line. Also smokes like a SOB. Pics soon. Thanks

Heater hose is in that neighborhood (between oil filter & head) No big deal to change, just a PITA.

Good luck,
Jim

Sounds likely, that hose seems to get abused every-time I change the oil filter.

When you see smoke like that, STOP! If it was your oil cooler lines and not your anti-freeze, you would have been very sorry to have continued driving it. Generally smoke pouring out from under the hood is the kind of problem that requires immediate action.

More to the point, bet the indy bent it out of the way (and cracked it) to get at the last 2 glo-plugs (don't ask me how I know)

Good point, I had a shop "find" a leak in mine while replacing the number 5 injector a few years ago.

Exactly.

You didn't happen to take a peek at the temperature gauge during this "smoking" incident?

What is the distance from your home to your school? Actually, more to the point, how long is the trip from school to home?

If I saw so much as ONE "drift" of smoke from under my hood I'd be pulled over/shut down and under there in an instant. WAY risky to drive that way, could have overheated or messed up the engine.

Exactly. It overheated on the way to the school.

Then, it was driven home from the school with very low coolant........probably nothing in the head.

I can never understand why people keep on driving when the car is screaming "stop! save me!!"

One of my friend's brother's was driving his pontiac grand am to bring my friend somewhere, along the way smoke started coming out from under the hood, and from the exhaust, and the "LOW OIL PRESSURE!!" and "SERVICE ENGINE" light went on and it was dinging its chime, BUT THEY DROVE THE WHOLE WAY TO WHERE THEY WERE GOING (about 2-3 miles), then turned it off (idling super rough) and ended up having to have it towed. I couldn't believe it.

Ended up having to have half the engine rebuilt, it blew the head gasket and destroyed items within. All I could do was shake my head.

In the last couple years I bought three nice 240Ds that were abused by their young owners, ran them out of oil after dad had told them "be sure and check the oil every time you fuel up" yah right. Its a good thing it wasn't smoke coming out from under the hood
