My cigar hose experience.
Just thought I would add my cigar hose experience to the mix.
I put viton hoses on yesterday cause I run biodiesel. I replaced the cigar hose with a regular one. After I did this the car started making a dull thumping sound, it almost sounded like something was rubbing. The sound was much more pronounced when the car was cold. Today I put the cigar hose back on and the sound went away. I am now a firm believer in the cigar hose.

what is the importance of having that hose kinda tapered at both ends, as opposed to running a straight hose?

I have been told it dampens the pulse of the fuel being pumped back to the tank.

it sounds like some cars are affected and some are not. I ran a 240d with regular hose with no ill effect and its still running that way I think.

Cigar hose on 300D
BioD,
Sorry this is one of those situations where Duct tape is not the answer! Given the somewhat higher pressures the 300 will produce (over the 240) a normal hose will not 'muffle' the pressure feedback. I suggest you go get the CIgar and monitor it for leaks. |

The cigar hose is on, and I will keep an eye on it. The other fuel lines didn't look like the biodiesel had done much to them. I am going to cut them open and see what they look like inside.

the hose should be fine. even on b100 it will last a while. most people are replacing them due to old lines that start to leak after time.

My wrecked '85 had been running on bio for a year with no problems with the hoses, the same with my '84. The '85 has been sitting with bio in the lines since Thanksgiving and has only been started twice and the hoses are still fine. However, on the "biobeater" Datsun pickup we have, the hoses have to be changed more often than you change your socks(no cheesy jokes ).

My 409d did not have the cigar hose, but someone had put a standard hose with a primary filter in its place. I assume the filter was absorbing the pulse. Perhaps it would work for you.

That is a pretty clever idea.
If you order the prefilter for the 115 chassis 240D, you get a straight one as opposed to a 90 degree one. That may be easier to use for this application.

Hey! Thanks for the thought-provoking discussion on this.
My 300SD had had the cigar hose replaced with straight hose, and ever since (although until now, I didn't connect the two) it had a sort of "chuffing" sound at part throttle. Quiet at idle and at WOT(or at least free of chuffing). I read this and thought, hmmm. So tonight, I adjusted my valves. (I had speculated that tight valve clearance might have had something to do with the noise) Chuff still present, though ol' SD was much quicker afterwards. Not having a cigar hose "in stock", i grabbed a Beetle fuel filter (think 115 prefilter) and installed this in the line where the cigar hose had been. NO MORE CHUFFIN! Thanks Mercedesshop! Cigar hose is on the way... Have a cigar, please! |
