Search the threads and you'll discover that it is not uncommon for 123's to have a problem where the starter will not initially engage when the key is moved to the start position. Try holding the key in the start position for a longer period---8-10 seconds. Mine had this problem for a long time in cold weather. The problem has now disappeared.

Slow Starter

Has anyone had a starter that worked but just did not turn fast enough to kick things off? Ive put new glow plugs ,cracked and bleed and primed lines, pulled and cleaned injectors, fully charged battery.
This is the problem ,the battery ,once that I couldnt start my 78 300 cd I returned it to my 79 300d wagon, noticed right off that the wagons engine turned a lot faster, could this be the starter not turning fast enough?. CHANGE STARTER?

The starter could very well be the problem. If you don't have sufficient cranking speed, a diesel can't get the required compression and won't start.

Before you change the starter, check your supply cable and ground cable for cleanliness. Any corrosion over the years will reduce the current flow and cause the starter to spin slower.

your right

The sellers of the car botched the positive wire after closer inspection. The wire had been spliced together with alot of electrical tape as a connector, this looks like a $4 fix ,thanks . couldnt see this from the top of the car.Try this and get back to report a happy ending ,hopefully .

That's almost certainly the culprit. Don't you botch the fix, either. Get yourself a brand new cable with a properly crimped on terminal end. Don't buy a cheap one for a gasser, either. It won't be heavy enough to carry the current for the diesel.

starter replacement on a 78 300cd

Just a little insite on replacing the starter ,about a 2 hour deal the first time.Tools a #10 allen wrench ,1/2 in. drive ,one swivel , extensions approx 12 to 14 inches ,you almost have to do this under the car ,no doubt about it,get the front of the car on jack stands ,and plenty of light up top and below, keep the swivel as straight as possible while appling pressure ,this will keep the tool from jumping out of the bolt ,be carefull that you get the allen wrench tool all the way into the bolt before turning, these bolts are usually very tight and take a little coaxing with a helper bar,and dont forget to soak the night before with wd.Read your manual also ,one linkage bar will have to be taken off to drop the bohemouth starter, one large bolt ,then move the linkage, flip the starter upside down and it just comes out..Reverse can be a bit to handel ,youll need to wedge the starter in its hole so bolts can be started ,this is a tight area so be patient going into it.good luck

is this the issue wherever the car sort of sounds like its winding up if you turn the key, but the starter doesnt actually turn?

my brother had a really terrible japanese car that would stick like that, so he had to keep a hammer in the car

as for my 240-- it does it on occasion, but it seems like its only whenever i let the glow plugs cycle extra long? ive always been under the impression that if you release the parking brakes and switch gears, let it roll back a little and let the transmission "catch" a new gear(with your foot on the brakes, i dont like the feeling of the gears holding the car on an incline) it always starts the next time

am i one of those fools that doesnt exactly know what hes doing? heh heh i was under the impression that the starter and transmission were linked somehow.

also-- in vws i have had the same problem and rocking the car when its in gear always helped the cars to start.

*edit* the sound it makes is a "click-crunch-whirr" all in one syllable, of course
