Hello thanks for the info my car has no turbo,it hac 270,000 miles my uncle bought it new and gave it to me at 200,000 I have adusted the valves replased glow plugs and checked , checked vacume pump and system, heres the problemabout every 1,000miles the air cleaner is saturated with oil and there is a aluminum pile of shavings below element, will not start under 20'f even either does't help and alot of blow by espesialy when cold.great car runs fine and plenty of power does 75mph down the highway and I get 27mpg she been driven on alot of dirt roads all here life and held up great. does any one know what price range rebuilding by diesel would be I'd be doing the work myself. I'm thinking about buying one with less or better millage and useing the engine seen a 85 and a 78 sounds like the engines are the same as long as its a n/a thanks

well the turbo
version came along about 81 or 82 in the 123 body. i think 78 in the 116. so yes, any non turbo should be a great fit. the later euro non turbos may be a little different in the location of the ac compressor, but that may not be a problem as i recently read that the places you need to bolt to remain in place on the newer blocks, too. the euro motors have different injectoin pumps which seem to perhaps give a little better performance although i have never seen factual evidence, just antecdotal. the euro pumps and hard lines interfere with us cruise control, but the us pump and lines should be interchangalbe with it.
