Intrument cluster? 420 cluster in a 300SD
im converting my 420 to diesel. Does anyone know what gauges and intruments in the cluster i need to change and which i can keep?

I'd imagine you could keep all of them, I'm not sure how the tach works on the gassers so it may or may not work "plug and play", but the "economy" gauge could be reworked to act as a boost gauge for the turbo, its pretty easy to do. The speedo is also calibrated for the 2.47 differential, but if your keeping the diff from the 420 in there then it would not be a problem. Everything else should work I'd imagine. Fuel sender/tank will need some modifications too most likely.

Can't you use a cluster from a "126" 300SD, I know it fits. It won't be plug
and play but you will have all the gauges you need. |

ah yes
yes i can but then i have problems of making sure i have an airbag light and an ABS light because sure as s*&t some state inspector will complain about not having a light for the options on the car. Both have to be in good order to pass

So just take the guages out of the 420 cluster and stick the SD's guages in. They unbolt and pull right out.
The speedo is different but you could use it, I'd use the diesel tach. The guage over on the left with the fuel, temp, and oil pressure is also different. You could use it though. That way the newer 420 cluster would retain all the warning lights.
