There is a nice article from the STAR on rebuilding a TURBO in the Mercedes Benz Technical Companion from Bentley Publishers. Great Book. So great I almost started a thread on it

Yes you can rebuild your turbo yourself. There is a lot of info in the archives concerning turbo rebuilds I would suggest you do a search.
Here's one to start you off:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=111519

You can buy rebuild parts for as low as $20 or a drop in rebuilt unit for about $250.

Isn't dynamic balancing important?

The turbo spins so fast, I would think that it would need to be dynamically balanced to prevent self destruction.

Turbo

I have rebuilt 2 KKK turbo's. First one was on a Audi 5000 and the second on a porsche 930. Both were very easy and had no problems with either.
Don't remember where we got the kit for the audi but the porsche was from a magazine.

The rebuild kit is what they call a "cartridge." Its the center section with the two fans sticking out. It has the important bearings and seals and is balanced. You take the intake and exhaust housings off and replace the center. But be careful with the fans, you don't want to knock them out of balance.

The kits we got just had seals and bearings. You had to completely dissasemble the turbo to re seal. The compressor and turbine wheels were indexed so the only went on one way. The turbo in the 930 got lots of work out after we rebuilt it so I know it was ok. I don't remember what ever happened to the Audi I rebuilt it when I was a young apprentice and now I'm an old bastardor so I'm told.

There is a trick about "balancing the turbo shaft/fans"

If you send me the parts and 50 bucks I will balance them for you

...anyone who knows jack about turbos will know what I am talking about

Maybe buying one already rebuilt and tested is a better way to go. Turbos are very precise devices and built to very close tolerances. Unless you have the equipment, go for a rebuild.

6 seconds into a google search?

Turbo maps are neat stuff. We have discussed them quite a bit over on the schuman automotive forum.
