still will not shut off.....

I have finally narrowed my shutoff problem down to the where the valve on the injection pump. The valve is stuck....I can get it to shut off with the mitey-vac but it takes 30-40 lb of pressure and it does hold the pressure which leads me to think that a simple cleaning is all it needs.....I cannot get it off however. I have the ALDA removed to get to the rear nut(found out the ALDA is shot in the process) and it is stuck under a plastic unit to the front engine side of it. Two wires come out of the plastic unit and it has a screw similar to the headlight deal....I am not sure how to take the plastic piece off and cannot find it in the online service manual any help would be appreciated and If you need pics I will get them tomorrow....Thank you

The shutoff valve will only go to 29 inches of HG, not pressure. I am sure this is what you ment. Are you saying that it wont shut off untill it gets to 29 HG? Can you hear it bind. There is a small wire rod inside that connects to the fuel rack.

Post some pics.

I am confused. A vacuum guage wll only go to 30 inches. That is the theorical "perfect" vacuum.

Are you using a Mity Mite or something?

In my testing on shutoff valves, the shutoff should actuate at about 7 inches HG. It actually starts to close at 5 inches but full shutoff will happen at only 7 inches.

Something doesn't make sense, about 30 inches of Hg is a "full vacuum" (0 psia) so you can not get any higher vacuums. The vacuum pump in the car provides around 20 inches, or so. Are you saying that the vacuum provided from the vacuum pump is not sufficient to shut off the valve?

The circuit that the shutoff valve is on does not receive a 29 inches full vacuum. The valve only needs 7 inches of vacuum to work. I hooked up a vacuum guage in series once when I was troubleshooting the system and was amazed at how little vacuum a fully functioning shut off valve needs.

Yes 0 inches of vacuum is 14.7 psia and 29.95 inches of vacuum is 0 psia or void of atsmosphere.

I'm going to have to run over to the shop I borrowed the guage from and see wtf I'm really saying before I say it....I am not sure of the measurements (lbs/hg/etc..) It is a snap on vacuum tester if that helps.....as far as the #s that is what I got.....I apologize for not having my ducks in a row before posting...

I believe something in the valve is stuck not allowing the vacuum pressure do its job

It may may a difference that he's not talking about a 617. I don't know how different the shut off is on an 87.

The photo...

The problem I am having is getting the plastic piece ( to the left ) off. Notice that the piece overlaps the shutoff valve.
