Bad Injector... how to verify?
 

I believe I have a bad injector on my SDL, what's the best way to verify that this is indeed happening?

I would swap in another injector and see if theres any difference. If you dont have one laying around you could have it hooked to a hard line OUTSIDE:eek: the engine and look at the spray pattern, (when cranking, not running) see if it drips. I've never done this, its eaiser to just stick in another. You could crack each injector line and figure out which cyl has a problem and swap injectors and see if the problem follows the injector.

The sound is centralized within the motor... could I put a piece of hose to the injector then the other side to my ear like a gasser to give any idea of which one is bad?

I haven't had much luck with that, try it. You proly need to figure out which cyl it is, if you haven't done that, and go from there.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow, I was going to go back out to play but I haven't slept in days so I'm beat.

The best way is to hook up the injector to a tester and observe the spray pattern. I guess you don't have a tester. What makes you think you have a bad injector? Typically you would hear pinging while cruising if you had a bad injector.

Idle sound is a bit different than the 603s I've heard on here. I thought it could be injector. T-chain is okay, maybe IP needs to be timed. :confused:

on the 603s are sensitive to things that the 616 617s are not. mine kept working loose and would rattle like crazy. also the seals at the tips can cause rattling too. so it could be pinging from other things than the injector being bad.

what works better than the tube is a thin length of hardwood, i.e., a hickory rake handle. Sound transmission is more efficiently transferred.

IIRC, I had a tech take my injectors out and he hooked it up to a machine at the MB shop that did a spray pattern test. While it was OK 40K ago, I think that when it warms up, I will take them out again since they have 100K now and more later and have them cleaned and checked.

I beg to differ on that one. I'd say the 616/617 nozzles (240/) are more vulnerable and more likely to have problems than the later nozzles because of the tiny hole in the pintle that can get clogged. The later nozzles don't have these holes, though their spray pattern isn't as misty as that of the older nozzles.

Hit Man X, so far it doesn't sound like you have a bad injector. What is different about your idle? You can also try Diesel Purge or some other cleaner if you have doubts. I'd start there if you haven't already done so.

Start cracking the injector lines and see if it goes away.
