Was outside temp display an option?
On the 1980 300SD?
There is a display window with a piece of foam painted black where it would be in both of mine. I've always assumed that the window is there for a reason. Just wondering.

That piece is for models with the transmission shifter on the steering column. It would display what gear the car is in.

Ah ok. That makes sense.
So here's my next question. Has anyone ever tried to install an outside temp display there? Maybe one from a later 126 SD could be made to work?

I would think
I would think that you could make it work; assuming of course that the openings are the same size. It might be a pain to get the new line through the firewall. My understanding is that the sensor in the newer cars (126 SDL in my case) is located near the front license plate.
Good Luck!

It might be a hoot to try. If I come across one in the pull a part maybe I'll give it a go.
The sensor for my 124 is up front by the license plate so I figure they are all intended for that general vicinity. There is an extra hole in the firewall grommet for the trunk release so that would be pretty easy.

Thats a neat idea, ive always thought about adding one in to my 300D. I also really like the overhead seatbelt warning light in the w124's and w201's, would like to find a way to retrofit one of those into my w123 as well. One day..
I always find it funny in the summer when my temp gauge in my C280 is reading 126 degrees.... they seem pretty accurate most of the time, but in extreme heat the sensor pickes up all of that heat reflecting off of the pavement.

Later W126 ones ('83+ ?) are simple. Four wires, hot, ground, sender, and hrm... illumination I believe.
Would be a very simple install. Just pickup the sender from a later car (front bumper/plate area), minor wiring, and you're done.

Tried to get one for my 300D as well from a Pick n Pull. 4 wires is all, but they are a royal pain to pull. Two of the wires run into a larger harness and then another larger harness and out the firewall. Only after tracing that did I see the wiring cut on the other side.. I saw one wire go off to the right somewhere. If I were to attempt it again, I'd probably check on the price of a new wire harness, and just grab the display and sensor off the donor.

They came in the 201s too, little display in the bottom of the IP, easy to pull from the IP and three plugs behind it. Don't try to remove the bezel from the temp display, it holds the LCD in and will destroy the display. Just remove the two screws from the back of the cluster and slide the whole thing out through the front. Should be pretty easy to shape the bezel with a dremmel and put it into a different car, fairly small display.
