Thanks you all very much. My car has absolutely no issues starting down to 10 degrees out and below that its a little cranky. However I would like to warm it up before hand to keep the wear off the engine so I think I am just gonna put it on a 2 hour timer like you guys mentioned and keep it on that all winter.

Ha,
I didn't even think about your intercooler. Does anitfreeze also help with the cooling. I know that plain H20 holds and transfers a lot of energy so I wondered if Anitfreeze would diminish that property.

With this cold weather good darn thing you have that block heater as much as a pain it was to put in. I hear it is going to get in the teens this Friday and weekend. Not so sure how this working on the cars thing is going to go

Anti-freeze as you mentioned doesn't transfer the heat as well as water, add some RedLine Water Wetter to help it out.

I live in an apartment, no place to plug in. I've started it down into the upper teens. So far, so good.

The 3176 Cat I tried to start this morning didn't fare so well. It cranked over for a good thirty seconds (temp around 14 degrees), coughed a few times like it was going to start, and then started slowing down. I remembered the ether button, but by then it was too late.

Around 50

HA! I don't start mine all winter She's in the barn sleepin' And just in case you forgot what she looks like:

I did plug her in down around 50 and less mostly because my drive is only about 10 miles one way and I think it helps with "short trip condensation".I always had it plugged in at work and at home. I think with a valve adjustment things may be better in the cold. I never plan on driving it in the winter anyway so I may never know how low it really will start

When to plug in diesel

My 1970 220D starts down to about 22 degree F, below that I plug her it. My 300sdl (with all glow plugs working) will start in the single numbers when I am away skiing, but I plug her in at around 15 degrees when home.

I will be re-installing my tank type heater this summer. daBenz is a summer car and it will be cheaper to warm up on electricity than diesel in my location - unless things change with diesel prices.

Other than risking a hard time starting or not being able to start the vehicle at all, is there any risk of damage to the engine by not plugging in the block heater? My 300SDL is sitting outside and the temp here in WI dropped jsut below 0 with wind chills to -25 over night. The hood release did not want to pop the hood and I was afraid to force it for fear of breaking something, thus the inability to plug in the heater.

when you do start it up the oil will be thick and the pistons will be un-lubed for a while. usually at any start up the cylinders are dry anyway so that is more or less normal.

mobil 1 syn 0 wt oil is what i have now in both red and brownie. both are plugged in. i will go out in a few minutes and see if they start at -7f.

so where are you in wisc?

addendum from www.dieselgiant.com

A cold engine does not start at its best! Don't wait till it gets cold to install this high powered block and coolant heater. Heats the engine and cooling system to nearly 100 degrees for a quick start-up on those cold mornings. Made of a heavy duty element and electrically grounded for safety. Those cars running on WVO or Veggie really need a good block heater to reduce the time you have to run on petroleum. A warm engine reduces wear on rings and valve train components. Also a reduction in start-up emissions with a warm engine will result. Reduce smoke and decrease the time it takes to achieve full oil pressure at idle. Great for engines with high miles or lower than normal compression. Helps them start MUCH more quickly and reduces glow plug system and battery wear

addendum from me

red started right up.

brownie with the suspect block heater is quiet. her glow was very long compared to reds. obviously the diff between the hot and cold engine. back to the charcoal briquets in the cast iron frying pan.

Heck yeah!

How about this? It was about -5*f outside today. All I had was lots of cranking, a boatload of glowplug time and a few sprays of Axe "essence" down it's gullet. No ether or block heater. I coulden't use the block heater even if I wanted, the prongs froze and boke off in the female end of the plug at work last night. Looks like I'll be keeping a spare cord in my trunk from now on.

Yah, my car wouldn't start in December below 25F, but then I changed the oil from 15w40 Rotella T to 5w40 Rotella Synthetic,

Sure helped, now she'll start down into the teens, (not at 5F though, tried, and failed, this morning!)

No you won't hurt it, just let if warm up a bit before driving it. It is times like that when having a sump full of Mobil 1 0w40 or 5w40 really makes a big difference!
