Not all Thermostats are created equal= problem solved

From one of my earlier threads
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=143583

Long story short=

New Motorad t-stat.........No worky, engine stayed cold
New Whalen t- stat....... No worky, engine stayed cold
One used " stat....... " "

I ordered a Behr Thermostat and installed today....... No more problem. engine heats right up to spec and boy do I have defrost and heat now in the cab.

Summary...I can only assume I got 2 bad stats... they were all installed properly BTW.. IMO they were failing open somwhat and allowing coolant to pass.

I haven't heard the best things about the Whaler thermostats. Behr makes good thermostats. I think it is best to go with the Behr over the Whaler when you have the choice.

There should be a small arrow to indicate which way up

If its running ok, forget it, if not do a search to learn about arrows

Motorrad= junk. I had my tsat die on my SD on a Fri night @ midnight. Removed stat, drove home seeping coolant, no overheat, ran cold. Installed motorrad stat the next morning, car overheated, stat not opening. Punched out guts of broken stat and drove like that for three days (holds the gasket in place, no leak) I was freaking out that something else was amiss, installed behr, problem solved.

I just don't think the motorrad one works properly for a 617, IMO...

So.... do I need to pull it apart and check which way the arrow points?

I find that hard to believe there is a up side . There were no instructions.

I'll pull it and check if you think it's necessary... I purchased 2 and there was a small arrow on it.

thanks

Bennett

My replacement thermostat was a Behr and had an arrow on it.

For a 617 turbo motor...about how long is it taking you guys with known good thermostats to get up to, lets say, 80C?

My thermostat (or other conditions) causes the engine to hover about 65-70C until I really rip open the car on the highway...I guess I need to check my upper rad hose and see if it feels hot when the engine is not up to 80C on a cold morning

There is no "proper" way to aim a t-stat unless it has a bleeding hole in bulit into it. If it does, that should be up.

I rarely get to 82*c unless the engine is at idle for 30+ minutes or accelerating for a good amount of time. Crusing on the highway (during 30-45*f winter temps) will stay between 50-60*c. All this without running an engine fan. With a fan, I rarely ever get over 60*c.

During the summer is a different story. I'll get to 82*c pretty quick and stay there.

two things

In forcedinduction's picture, is that o ring supposed to be installed with the big rap around ring? And, when compared to other vehicles, the t/stat looks like it is installed upside down. But then that makes sense since the Benz radiator circulates down. Paul.

Oh-oh.. when I removed my stat there was no second 0-ring so I did not use the extra o-ring that came with my stat....

Are we sure that extra 0 -ring is used on a 80-81? Mined does not leak, again there were no instrcutions with the Behr

I don't see it mentioned in the skinnerbox link.. but I see it in the above pic

Your engine should never be running below 80C after its warmed in a couple of miles.

Stevo ... any thoughts on the extra O-ring?

I noticed on the bos it say's

: Maintance free
: seal as option
:Exact control of temp
: Better heating capacity
: Lower Fuel consumption

Mine reaches 80C after about 5 minutes of driving on secondary roads (30-40 mph). I try to keep below about 3000 until it gets close to 80C. If I get on the highway with a cold engine it will reach 80C quicker, maybe 2-3 minutes.
