308D starting and shutoff issues

i've posted this in tech as part of another thread but i'll move the diesel specific stuff here instead:

Ive been asked to look at a 308D truck for a friend, i believe it has a 601.940 motor

the first problem being the engine wont shut off on the key, i cant seem to find the fuel cutoff valve on the injector pump, is it electrical on this model? if so any tips on where its located and wether it simply needs replaced or if it can be tested?

Its also a bit difficult to start, u need to plant the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over, after a fwe turns it will start and run at just above idle speed with the boot still floored then after 3-5secs it'll seem to clear and rev right up, it then wont idle on its own for a minute or so, im thinking perhaps one or more of the glowplugs are dead?

any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

to stop engine

Lift accelerator pedal with toe to stop.

Check glowplugs, valve clearance, fuel lines for air leaks, fuel filters.

Where in the world are you, I worked on one of these fine trucks back in the uk in the 80"s

lift the accellerator pedal?! surely the motor should have an electric fuel cutoff valve/solenoid which cuts the fuel upon turning the igntiion off?!

and yes its in the UK, i'll check the glowplugs first, if they're alright i'll look into air leaks and valve clearance

cheers
