1980 300td are they all turbos?

Think I messed up last try? Are all 300 TD station wagions turbos. Hayne's not very clear on this and seems they may be some that are touring diesels and not turbo? Please help me here. Factory engine #617 912 098597 ..... 123 190 12 015483. Is this the correct engine for this car? Having trouble getting car started and trying to find correct fuel injection pump start of deilvery information. Will reply to anyone that is willing to help! Thanks SMoe.

The 1980 300TD is NA (non-turbo). Engine number 617.912 is non-turbo, engine number 617.952 is turbo.

Thanks

Thats what I thought but like I said all I am using is a Hayne's book and not very clear on this subject! Talked to a parts place about injectors and was told it should be a Turbo modle for this year, thought that was wrong but wasn't sure. How about the fuel injection timing.... any ideas on what it should be and if that is a cause of not starting in a short time? It has slowly been getting harder to start and can't seem to fine the cause yet?

The only Turbos in 1980 were the W116 300SD and the early production W126 300SD. The W123 chassis never saw the Turbo until 1982 model year.

sure its not an early '82 modle car built late 1981 and therefor titled as an '81? or has had a heart transplant in its life?

And the 8/81 on in the link is a '82 model year....even if its titled as an '81.

Manufacturers model years do not follow the actual calender year. They all tool up for the next modle year mid year.

Mine is registered an 81 300TDT but was manufactured 6/81. With 371k miles and the blowby to prove it, I'm sure it's the original engine. But I have yet to do more research (not that I have reason to doubt this).

On the other hand my 83 300D was manufactured 12/82 but designated a MY 1983.

According to this site, the 300D and 300CD was first a turbo in 82, but the 300TD lists the 81 as both NA and turbo. I assume they started using the turbo in the TD sometime mid-year 81.

it wouldnt surprise me

if they built some turbo diesel wagons in 81, but most sources list 82 as the first year.

I think John Lennon's 1979 300TD was a factory turbo, but then again, he had like the first 300TD brought into the USA...

1981 300TD's were turbo, 1981 300D's were non-turbo. The wagons had a one year jump on the sedans.
I would rule out an air leak in the fuel system before I did too much to the IP....

i forgot about the wagons getting the turbo early, (it doesnt surprise me) but i seem to remember the coupes getting it early by reading the road tests back then.
