1984 300SD A/C issues

Hi all and tthanks to Brian who helped me successfully fix my tranny problem. One last project, My A/C. I got this car about three weeks back. The ac compressor was frozen... and no belt... I realize that this could be a large issue with possible debris in the system..... first of all I picked up a new compressor.. rebuilt one only a 100 bux.. good place to start I thought. anyway I installed it and tried to charge the system R134 with help of an adapter... I may track down some R12 later if I get the system working...
It seemed to only take about a can of freon. and the compreeor never kicked, in... I tried shorting the pressure switch at the drier but it would still not kick in.... #1 should it start no matter what at that point, what else could be wrong... #2 what voltage should be at the electrical connection at the comprsseor be to activate it???? Im thinking its possible the comprsser I got could have a bad clutch,, this is my first concern... then any suggestion on how to clean out the system of any debris.....thanks in advance.....

Joe
