Is my 82 300sd supposed to have O-Rings on the oil filter tube?

I read some post that said you needed to replace the small rubber O rings on the tube in the oil filter cansiter.

A friend had given me some and I just went to do that and my tube has 2 black metal rings at the bottom. It seems the rubber O rings fit right there, but the top one is at a place where the tube tapers out wider and seems to pop out of place when trying to insert it in the filter.

Is my 1982 300sd suppose to even have these rubber O rings and are there supposed to be just one of them on the tube or two?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. But apparently mine has never had the rubber O rings at all.

Thanks.

The rings that you think are metal are actually rubber. They are the hardest, flattened excuses for an elastomeric member you have probably ever encountered. Worse than original push rod oil drain tube o-rings on a Corvair. You are probably thinking "No, he doesn't know what I'm talking about, these things are so hard they clink!" They will SHATTER they are so brittle. Really.

I have to laugh at this one Reverend. Those two black metal rings are the o-rings!!

If they have been in the vehicle for 20 years, they become hardened to the point of appearing like steel. Just get a tiny knife and break them out of there.

You'll be shocked.

Believe Pete as to the existing o-rings. Your difficulty with the new o-rings may be due to incorrect sizing. Do a search, I am certain that I have seen the correct o-ring size called out on this forum. If you have the correct size, a dab of fresh oil on the new rings would help them slip into place.

Good Luck,
Jim

Yes, oh yes, do laugh

Brian,

I appreciate the respect with the title and all that jazz, but no need to flatter the stupid preacher. You got to be kidding!

I will pop them out later, but I think I lost a new rubber one that I tried to put on the tube and down through the filter. Hope it does not crap up my engine somehow. I stuck the shop vac hose down the canister to try to suck it back out, but am not sure it came out again.

So go laugh some more!
Because right now I am definitely laughing at myself!

Hey willrev!

You ain't stupid, you just ignorant. Everyone starts off ignorant.

But, hang around here for a while and you'll get 'educated'!

I found some replacement O-rings at Advance auto parts. The size was 6x10x2mm. You'll need two. About 60 cents each.

Oh, BTW where is Nashville, NC? Never heard of that one. Then again about the only time I've gone to NC was to ride a bicycle. Usually too tired to know where I was. A wonder I made it home each time!

Like others have said those rubber O-rings have petrified. They are easy to find at your local hardware or parts dealer...Its a good idea to replace them once a year on principle. They are fairly cheap.
