'78 300CD shifter indicates wrong gear

I'm a little sketchy on this one since I looked at it some time back...
Last summer I looked at a '78 300CD, automatic transmission.
Car isn't great, just needs A Whole Lotta Love.
It's worth another look. I passed by the other day and saw it is still there.

Owner says the transmission shifter indicator shows the wrong gear since he had the transmission rebuilt.
How could this be? Sort of casts a pall on the talents of the rebuilder, no?

Is this a big deal to make right?
I think I have a distressed seller and possible bargain. A grand might get it.
Oh, Sweet Thang is headed for distress.......married to a budding Diesel Weasel.....

How NOT to buy a MB Diesel:
Know little or nothing about diesels or Mercedes Benz.
Get the WVO fever.
Drive 70 miles to a used car lot in the country.
Buy the car without having it inspected, because it seems like a good idea at the time....
I'll be back. I'm gonna need help.
I love this car already!

Maybe this could just be the need for new shifter bushings. Rebuilder of the tranny might not have done these or the owner could have just re-installed the tranny himself and just reused the old bushings.

Run-em,
Owner told me he had it rebuilt in a transmission shop.

Diesel Giant,
Oh, you think I should drive it?

Next week, maybe.

I looked at it, i.e., walked around it, before I stumbled into my hillbilly SDL.
So if it is sloppy; bushings, and/or...?

Thanks,

def most likly the bushings on the linkage and if ur gonna be down there replacing them ive found its easier to pull the while thing off so you can replace the shifter seal while you there!! ~Luke
