HOGWILD maintainance day!

I'm gonna go nuts on my car for a day or two.....
a couple of questions...

What is THE BEST way to flush a transmission without needing a machine?

Lubrimoly products aren't available locally, and don't want to wait for shipping from Diesel Giant.. can anyone recommend and Canadian product lines?? at which stores?

I'm taking the car to a "diesel shop" to get the IP and injectors looked at, what do I look for in a good shop? this shop has a fairly good reputation, in that i have not heard anyone complain....

I'm not sure what is the BEST way to flush a transmission--Here's 2 ways i have done it.....
1) Use the FSM recommended method--drain the pan, drop the pan & filter, pull the plug on the TC. Reassemble.
2) Cut a line going to the tranny cooler, and use another piece of hose to direct tghe two ends into a 5 gal bucket--unless you are SURE of the direction of flow!. Start the engine and allow it to idle in Park as you pour more tranny fluid into the filler tube. Continue until all the fluid coming out of the cut hose looks and smells clear.

Use ANY oil with the proper ratings. Oils for gasoline engines will not be able to handle the soot--or read ALL the oil threads.

I would do a diesel purge before taking it to an injector shop. Are you having driveability problems? If the idle seems rough to you, consider replacing the motor mounts.

I have two friends in the transmission business, they both love transmission "flush" type changes, gives them a lot of business from damaged transmissions.

Drop the pan, drain the fluid, change the filter, re-fill.

It seems to me that if you do the standard maintenance on the transmission, as specified by Mercedes, and at the specified service intervals, then there is never any need to do a complete "flush".

That is sufficiently handled by the (mostly) new fluid and the new filter. And doing this at the stated interval means the old fluid is never so bad that it should need to be "flushed" out.

The 1980's era (into the early 90's too I guess) transmission service interval is actually pretty aggressive maintenance.

The only other thing I do personally is use Mobile Synthetic ATF. It seems to have excellent cold operation characteristics and I suspect it helps clean out varnish.

Drain a qt of fluid and add a qt of Trans-X and run the car a couple hundred miles before changing the fluid and filter/gasket. Usually people do this if they notice weird shifting issues, but I did it as a matter of course with my car when I first got it, to clean out any varnish that might be present. I don't think I will ever need to go that far again as the recommended change intervals will be good enough. If the fluid that's in it isn't burned or smelly you probably should just drain and refill, along with the usual filter and gasket.

Where in Canada are you?

If you include your location in your profile, we'll be able to answer your questions more easlily. I'm in Canada, and have no trouble finding Lubro-Moly products. Regarding your question re: injector pump and injector work, I know of at least one shop to stay away from. Again, if we know where you are, we can offer more specific advice.

A good drain and filter change will be sufficient. Unless you have a machine to push solvent through and then suck it ALL out, then just drain.

I'm gonna try some Lucas transmission fix and see what that does, I'm changing the fluid in the tranny soon anyway so it can't hurt..

I'm gonna do all the DIY stuff first and if I'm still not satisfied, I'll take it to a shop just for the sake of injector calibration or testing....

I BELIEVE in Diesel giant's products.......Sorry for the shameless plug, but the site has lots of awesome stuff on there...

In BC, I've found LubroMoly Diesel Purge at Lordco Auto Parts (85 locations), Bow-Wow Auto Parts (3 locations), and have even seen it at the local Mercedes dealership. Hope Fung Auto Parts also carries it. http://www.hopefungautoparts.com/LubroMoly.htm I know that I recently saw Diesel Purge in an unlikely place, but I can't remember where that was. It might have been a GM dealership's parts department.

In Edmonton, there's at least 3 places to find it: EC Automotive on 118 Ave, I&M Import Auto Parts at 11741 156 St, and Twin H at 10151 Whyte Ave.

In Saskatchewan, I'd check the local Volkswagen dealerships, and Mercedes dealerships. Local import parts stores are a good place to look, too.

Hope that helps.
