240 automatic transmission

Just wondering, is the automatic in an 82 240 the same as in the 81-84 300D? I am taking the engine out of an 82 240D that has an automatic and was just wondering.

Very different beasts. The 240d uses the 722.117 tranny and the 300 uses the 722.315.

Don't the early 300's have the 722.1xx? Seems like my 80 wagon had that style.
Does a 240 tranny work on a 300 if both take the 722.1xx? Also, do ALL 240's have the 722.1xx?

I just finished putting the tranny (722.1xx) from a 240 into a 300D ('79). Haven't had a chance to test drive it yet... I'll keep ya' posted.

The 722.117 tranny is a "4 bolt" (oil pan) tranny. The 722.315 is a very different "6 bolt" tranny. The early 300Ds, probably all the non-turbo varieties, had the 722.1xx 4 bolt. There would be some subtle differences such as vacuum vs. mechanical vs no modulation and presence or absence of a throttle position sensor (aka Bowden cable in the later trannys). The older W116 300SD uses a 722.120 4 bolt. Some internals are interchangeable between the 722.1xx trannys. For example, I know from checking the EPC that the torque converter that I will have left over from when I convert my early 240D auto to stick will work in my W116 300SD. I wish I knew more about what parts interchange on these.

Rick

Speedo.

I used the torque converter from the 300D (sorry, I'm too tired to look up the specific numbers for the trannies) with the tranny from the 240D (.117?). Got to drive it for the first time this afternoon. The only thing that didn't work properly is the speedometer, which reads REALLY high. Do I just need to get a speedo from a 240? I've got one (speedometer) from a 230 gasser in the garage, think that would work??

Jay.
