New to this forum - traded for a 1981 380sl

Hi all!
Appropriate time for this post!
I traded my 2000 victory sportcruiser motorcyle for a great looking 380sl with 128k miles.
I intended to sell it, but my wife loves the car!
That said, I am planning on following:
Just bot a pair of recently restored 450sl seats to replace existing. (I will be selling my existing ones shortly).
New dash cover
Two new sun visors
Fix the electrical gremlins - lights in dash not working, can't figure out the climate control
I will be taking her to a long time family mechanic to give a thorough going over.
I got a really nice new teannue cover
I'll be interested in reading about other projects.
Chris

- buy a 27 mm socket for a valve adjustment
- invest in a boost guage
- invest in a pyrometer
- fab a panel for those guages
- purchase a cd player and have it installed
- find a nut for the radiator emblem
- fix my throttle linkages something isnt right
- maybe new engine mounts and engine shocks for the heck of it
- change rear dif oil
- new t-stat to make myself feel good
- might as well flush the cooling system and clean it
- use the mercedes benz coolant

ive got alot to do.. might as well just make it my list i need to do ..

1. Take care of the PO's curb rash, get the wheels refinished and take care of pitting due to brake dust. And couple new tires. (within 1 week)
2. Oil Change, with Filter also seems I have micro leak at oil level sensor so I have that O-Ring to replace. (within 1 week)
3. Probably change the air filter while I am at it.
4. Need to address the deeply hidden spot of rust under door rubber. POR-15 hit my doorstep sometime today. (within a month)
5. Fuel lines are original, so I probably should take that plunge too, with a manifold cleanup and resonator flap extravaganza. Glow plugs are less than 1-year old, but should show them the light of day, ream out there little home and slather them up again. (sometime)
6. Not certain if I should have the injectors checked at the same time?
7. Full cleanup for cosmetics and self-esteem.

Nice little 8-900 mile road trip coming up next weekend wanna get ready for that!

Oh I forgot to include mine.

Replace the fuel shutoff valve, do a rear diff service etc. All this under the watchful eye of my camera man. These projects will go on DVD in the near future.

Have them check if it has an updated "double-row" timing chain on the engine, if it still has the original single row some of the 380 engines had it could be at risk for failure. MB put out a service alert for them to be switched over. Just trying to prevent any engine problems.

Don't want to hijack this thread

The mbz just had a rebuild on the engine.
I don't have the stomach to open her up to look at the single vs double chain.
Some of what I've read says that a well maintained 380 may not have the single chain problem.
I will be bringing it to the shop in the next couple of weeks.
The car came from an estate sale, with incredible service records.
Took the car down to Atlantic City a few weeks ago (I live in Jersey City).
Drove it HARD. Wife LOVED it...big thumbs up all the way their and back.
Thats why my wife wants to keep.
After the hard drive, she leaked some green and red fluids. Drove her again mildly, and minimal leaking....something I should be looking for?
PS...by keeping the benz, I just bot a 2004 HD custom Sporster.
My thinking, the benz was a trade for my toy, so keeping it means I get a new one!
I really wanted to trade up to a used "new" ford thunderbird.
Love that car!

Replace my one bad glowplug (still)
Replace my starter
Fix Power antenna
Fix Cruise control 5mph surge
Balance the flywheel
Find stronger rear springs
Replace the sunroof motor
Replace 3 bad door straps
Install new speakers and stereo (I might have room for a small subwoofer where the first aid box is)
Pre-turbo Pyrometer (Mabye this March)
Park brake pedal saggs and keeps the light on
Glove-box light
New tires
paint my rims
Adapt Engine Shocks
Install an intake air temp gauge

Adapt an N/A W123 300D air filter box to make room for a Cummins ISB intake heater.

MABYE I'll think about installing a muffler this year!

Fuel lines
Transmission fluid and filter
AC check, only making cooler warm air. Hoping to charge it up and roll.
Vacuum check for climate control, to get heat from somewhere other than defrost.
Italian Tuneup. Wheeeeeee!

And put some miles on it.

How NOT to buy a MB Diesel:
Know little or nothing about diesels or Mercedes Benz.
Get the WVO fever.
Drive 70 miles to a used car lot in the country.
Buy the car without having it inspected, because it seems like a good idea at the time....
I'll be back. I'm gonna need help.
I love this car already!

gettin' down to the short rows...running short on cash too, gotta get this old broad on the road and get those milage checks coming!

1. those stinkin' PITA to get at motor mounts
2. refinish the wheels
3. cruise control (I peaked at it, puked, copped out and sent it off to be done)
4. dash lights
5. dye the carpet, all one color...any color, but just one color
6. seat leathers or sheepskins, pool noodle thing...leaning towards sheepskins...actually leaning to the left in the drivers seat
7. delete 1 small dent, touchup paint

put a lotta miles her...no more loafing around the shop or under the shade tree, time to roll.

I think you can see the timing chain from the oil-cap opening, if you open the cap and shine a good flashlight up to the front of the valve cover you should be able to see the chain/sprocket wheel. From there you should be able to tell if its a single or double chain, no need to "open" anything up. It may be harder to see on the angled gasser engine, I am not sure, its readily visible on the diesels though. Its probably fine however if a mechanic went through it already etc...
