'94 124 E300D stumbling after start up

this might just be down to unusually cold weather, but my 606-powered 124 will start to stumble a bit after the first cold start of the day. It starts fine, but after about 2-3 secs running sounds like it's mis-firing with the revs going up and down until I give it a bit of gas, then it smooths out after a few more seconds.

I recently changed 4 of the 6 glow plugs, which seemed to cure the bad 'chugging' I had on start-up before when moving off.

You may possibly have an electrical circuit malfunction in your glow plug relay. In those model cars, the glow plugs are supposed to remain on for 30-60 seconds after the car starts to make sure it runs well in that time segment.

If your glow plug relay is not working right to keep the plugs on after start, you will get that rough running.

Perhaps you can find another glow plug relay one to subsitute into the car as a test.

Or maybe it is those other two plugs needing to be changed? What kind of condition is the wiring harness in?

wiring harness is in ok condition, the 2 plugs I didn't change (cyl 3 + 4) were stuck- didn't want to risk them breaking. Had the glow plug relay apart and all looks well.
