On my 85 SD after removing the wheels and calipers on the rears, my rotors came off. I did have to bang on them a bit, but there was no set screw for either one for me

ya, the rotor had a hole for it, it fit over a post on the hub. I used Balo rotors in back.

1983 No Set Screw
I just did the rear brakes on my daughter's 1983 300SD and there were no set screws. There is a locating pin, and the rotors came right off. Make sure the emergency brake is off.

Strange, can anyone dig up a manual that shows whan MB changed this?
I know for a fact that my 87 has a set screw in the rear rotors, because I did the same thing. The set screw blended in and I tried whacking the rotor off to no avail. Until I found the screw then she popped right off? Maybe one of their changes from the 85/86 model year?

There is definately no set screw. There is the mounting lug, but no set screw. I'll wait for nicer weather and get after it with the dead blow hammer and the blue wrench.
Thanks for your help. |

no set screw
I had a slow leaking rear caliper so I did both rear brakes (rebuilt calipers, pads, rotors, brake lines, pins, fluid). There were no set screws on mine - rotors pulled right off. On the driver's side I had a pin that aligned the rotor to the hub, on the passenger side (parking brake side) - not even the little alignment pin.
Brakes work great, no noise - all seems good.

As it turned out, the rear rotors were rusted to the hub. The deadblow hammer made short work of it, and the wirebrush and some anti-sieze on the mouting surfaces should prevent this from happening again.
Thanks for everyone's help. |

i am trying to remove the left rear. maybe that 64 screw is holding me back but on my rotor it looks like a larger locator. also maybe they are just rusted and need some banging.
