The Sniff

As a 20-something who drives an '85 TD, and loves it. I feel your pain. I used to get this response from guys I dated "*sniff* is this what you drive? Why?" my response is always, "so long."

Since the turbo is of no use until 2k rpm, what difference does that make? I've owned and driven a non turbo and frankly am tired of non turbo bashing. It was nearly as fast as the turbo and had less problems. While some of us are granpas here- I have four MB's, and three kids under the age of 10. I surf, wakeboard, just started kiteboarding again, and drive a off shore 65 foot sportfishing boat for a living. Ain't no dust gather on my shoulders, and I am not a granpa.

Oh, and tell your mom that your "grandpa car" is much safer than what most other 17 year olds drive, see what she says about that.

I agree my dads non turbo felt faster then my turbo merc. Was a good runner even with 437K on the odo so this non turbo bashing just stop.

You can also tell her, that that grandpa car, will still be running, while the other people your age are on their 3rd and 4th car. Oh, and Insurance ought to be cheaper too.

As someone who lives in retirement so. Florida I will say "grandpa" cars are; just big boats that go slow; and I never get behind anythibg that says CAMRY on it. And FWIW when I do see older folks in old M-B diesels now and then I actually think of them as classier, hip older people because they're NOT in one of those giant boats on wheels, or a Camry.

Your Mom needs to get a clue. ( All due respect for Mom.) You are lightyears ahead of your friends in what you drive.

First of all you are way ahead of most people your age as you clearly are living the way you want to. Why respond to "grandpa car" comments from anyone? Who gives a damn what anyone else thinks? People are all so clueless today. They have no idea how 98% of the world around them actually works. They can't fix cars, can't fix household appliances, can't work on their own homes, etc. They are more than happy to make a payment and call someone else to do the work for them. If there is one piece of advice I can give its to simply smile at them and walk away. Do the things that make you happy and that you love doing. Spending even a second keeping up with the Jones' or explaining yourself is time wasted. RT

Well, to be honest, my 300D 2.5T WAS a grandma car...she just handed it down when she stopped driving

The only real thing that matters to people at my school is that it's a 'Benz...that's pretty much all they look at. "You drive a 'Benz?!" "Yep, and it gets 30mpg! What's yours get?"

I tell people it's pretty slow (compared to Dad's car), but it really has potential when you let it have the RPM. And I love smoking out tailgaters on the freeway when I downshift

My parents love it because it's not a tin-can Kia or something of that genre.

The po of my SDL is in his 50's, same for the SD.

Both are pretty far over the hill by my standards anyway...

Know what you mean about moms. My mom calls all my mercedes "old fart cars" Ever since I was 17 I have owned a mercedes. First one being a 1974 450slc. Then I purchased an 83 300d turbo. That by far was my favorite (being my first diesel) car, until i purchased my 95 e300d. I sold that after owning it two years and regret selling it, but now I have purchases another 83 300d turbo. I am getting it road worthy and all fixed up so I can drive it daily. My mom saw it in the garage for the first time and she tried to sell it to one of her friends (that also is a mercedes guy). I told her its not for sale yet. hehe..
One thing for sure is I LOVE MY OLD FART CARS. HEHE... Not sure if she is calling me one too????
