Front End Noise 83 300SD

Hi, My 300SD, Has a cluncking (popping) sound coming from the right front end, you can feel it on the floor board. Funny thing it seems non existent when cold outside to very annoying or bad when the outside air temperature increases. anyway.. took the car to a mechanic, small shop where I have had good dealings in the past.. he took a device to listen to the control arms and said it was the upper control arm. He took the right side apart and found all the bushings to be in great shape. and could not find any other problems... the car still makes the same sounds... He told me basically nothing was wrong nothing to worry about... the problem is terribly to me... obviously Im not going back to him... Anyone have any simular problems with the front end noise or advise on DIY correction.. I think I will try to invest some time to fix what ever is wrong myself...

thanks Joe..

Please tell us where you are in the world.
Also, describe the conditions under which this sound/feeling occurs.
Turning ? - Left or Right ?
Speed , when slowing or accelerating ?
How many miles on vehicle ?

Some of these threads suggest recording the sound and posting that too.

Joe, MBZ front suspension has some odd (different from most eveything else, engineering). I would have someone look at it, that's a bit more familiar with these cars.

There is a heavy rod that goes from the lower end of the hub (near where the lower ball joint is located) back to the frame. Essentially the lower firewall. There is a bracket there that holds the "guide rod mount". It is a small version of a ball joint. You can visually inspect the dust boot on this thing, and if the dust boot is broken you can bet this is making the noise.

I just did my guide rod mounts. Solved my clunk-rattle problem. Wasn't alot of play in them but they sure made some noise.
