Primer pump going bad? 300SD

When I unlock and use my primer pump.. It very quickly pulls fuel thru my prefilter. BUT... it gushes a bunch around the primer pump.

Just below the handle of the pump, I have lots of fuel going all over the place. I wasn't able to get all the air out of my prefilter. Car runs and drives fine. Just wondering if this is "normal" I've heard of guys saying to crack an injector line... will it not gush fuel from the hand pump then?

Thanks
JP

PS.. the 10 dollar SD is up to about 1000 bucks. Getting new rear shocks, rotors, pads, a balljoint. It already got a full exhaust.

Most puke fuel when you use them to pump fuel to bleed the system...just make sure you screw it back down again before running the motor...they are replaceable for not a lot of $$.

Install the updated primer pump and never look back...that screw in/out job is a joke at best.

Pump

I see the little primer pump for sale on this site?

Is that what you are referring to? It doesn't look to have a handle on it.. how does it work?

Or are you talking about a small, electric driven primer pump?

I was thinking of adding a small racor electric heated filter, and installing a small facet style pump to feed it. My concern is using biodiesel in cold temps.

Its a little black primer pump made by bosch...the way it works is that you just push on it and it pumps. It has no screw in/out becuase it seals itself internally.

Really nice unit...cheap fix...and can make/break a car when it comes to having a running machine.

How cold of temps are you talking about?

Replace it with this, the updated one:
http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1MB12FET61QY16XCHK&year=1982&make=MB&model=300-SD-002&category=All&part=Primer+Pump

If its leaking fuel it can or will leak air. Also a small air bubble in the prefilter is normal, and with use will shrink a little.

Cold

It's not impossible to have temps down to -10F

I was thinking that a heated prefilter (like a racor 12V heated) in place of the little plastic throw aways, would be some added insurance in cold weather.

I plan to have it plugged in on a timer at home.. BUT.. I go away for a week at a time. I wouldnt want to come back to the car in some parking lot at 5 below zero and not have a prayer of getting it going.

I will of course make sure my glow plugs are up to specs. I was thinking that a few minutes of "preheat" on battery power into a racor filter would give me enough of a volume of fuel to go on.

Maybe the addition of a facet type pump to help the gloppy fuel. I am planning on running B100 in the summer, and some sort of Biodiesel/petrodiesel or k1 blend in winter.

Thoughts, opinions, wild guesses?

b20 would be reasonable in those temps I would think...shouldn't gel too badly...my only concern would be in the lines themself (assumign you had the engine block heater plugged in).

During the sumer b100 should be able to run fine with warmer temps. Mine used to have no problems at all down into the high 30F (home brewed).

Make sure you run an additive like Power Service at those temps to keep your fuel from gelling.

Also use an oil like Mobil 1 0w40; a battery will only give you so much juice at -10 so cranking speed counts!

A new or recent battery is also a must, along with a fresh set of glow plugs.

If its in good shape it will start, but plug it in when you can.

Thanks

Battery is brand new. Oil I just put in was synthetic 5w40.

So, you wouldn't do the heated filter?

I've seen some small inline fuel hose heaters. Electric. They are made by the same company that makes the hotfox fuel pickup.

Any electric product seems like it would overtax the 65A alternator. That's why I was looking at a short term battery powered use prior to start.
