82 300sd blew up-need advice

yeah so last week my car died twice and the second time i pulled over i looked under the hood and oil was all over the place....the mechanic says i blew a hole in the side of the motor but i guess this was slowly happening because i had a oil leak, anyway would you get a new engine or just part out the car?

Holes don't slowly form in the block....they usually happen pretty fast.

I would recomend looking for a good used engine....new rebuilds are costly and with a hole in the block you can expect to not get a core return for that one. Luckily you don't have a wagon with SLS , those engines are far more rare and costly as a result.

Please confirm that there is a hole.
You may still need a motor, but...
I don't know how often that happens, it seems more likely that
some other component blew, allowing oil to purge freely, causing
a condition like overheating to cause it to die.

Also, how many miles ? How many miles driven by you ?

My 300SD is leaking oil right now due to oil cooler line.
New lines are on the way.

it has 166*** on it, i got it around 124000. when i got it my dad said the person didn't drive it for about two years, i had electrical problems with it causing the hazards and other components not to work, recently i just put in a new alternator, water pump, vacuum pump and battery. when i replaced the alternator i noticed oil on my oil pan but didn't think anything of it. the mechanic says that i have a hole in the engine and its up to me with what i want to do. its my friends dads shop so i don't think the mechanic would lie, i just think its weird that all of a sudden its dead with a hole in the engine. i don't know what to do with it now, i guess sell it for parts on here and get a honda lol

i don't know what to do with it. i live on long island and its all the way on the other side of the island and will cost a arm and a leg to get it towed probably. it has a lot of new parts that i can resell but i don't know if i should tow it, junk it, or get a new engine.

You should be able to get a good used engine for under $1,000 assuming you can do the work yourself it beats junking an otherwise good car.

The hole in the motor thing sounds fishy to me.

what you should do with the car is largely dependent on what condition it's in (except for the engine). How's the rust, paint, seats, trans, A/C, etc. A good car is worth keeping whole, either to be fixed or sold as a mechanic's special. If it's rusty, it may be a parts car.

If the motor spun a rod bearing and kicked the connecting rod, that will punch a hole in the side of the block.

When was the last time you checked or changed the oil? Engines just don't all of a sudden throw a rod. MB builds some tough bottom ends.

i've had two do it, first one unexpectedly just went (78 300D) and the second one (83 300CD) started knocking very loudly right before it went. both left holes in the side of the engines just under the injection pump. the 83 had a hole on the other side was well.

normally

to blow a rod on a benz you would have to run it out of oil or very low or have a broken oil pump or oil pump drive.

the bottom ends almost never wear out except with one of the above.

Sorry about your motor, and I agree: What you do from here largely depends on the shape of the rest of the car.

On another note, are our signature entries supposed to be multiple lines of add space?
5 lines worth!!!!!

the paint is faded, the back window needs new seals so the trunk gets soaked as well as the back dash, the front window is cracked from a rock slammin into it, when i break it pulls to the right, the interior was just redone (leather wise) the only wood that is bad is the wood on the glove box, the tranny is good, i have a electrical problem where my lights on my cluster don't work/hazards don't work/antenna doesn't work/rpm gauge doesn't work. i don't know much about cars so i can't put in a new engine, my mercedes mechanic told me a while ago i'm gunna have trouble with it so i guess he's right. do you know where i could get that cheap engine thats around a grand? with these problems that i just listed is it worth keeping the car or taking out the good parts and selling them?

It sounds like you now have a parts car, and need to look for another. Of course, we're always looking for another, aren't we?

BTW, nice job cleaning up the sig line, although we'd like to see the car listing.....
