IT'S FIXED......

thought i would let you guys know that i got the old girl purring once again.
Funny thing is, I dont know if I really did anything,or if the diesel kleen did it for me.
I thought i would change the fuel element from the #3 to the #4to see if my problem was with the element and not with the internal workings of the pump. i was careful in cleaning and reinstalling both of these items. but this had no affect whats so ever. so i changed them back to thier original places as to keep the problem consistant.
The engine did run better the higher the rpm was, so i elected to just crank the idle way up and drive it as is for a few days to see if the diesel conditioner would clear things up. well, the second i turned up the idle, you could here that the engine sounded better. so i let it run that way for about 2 minutes and then turned the idle down again. and to my surprise it went right down to approx 700rpm and was running like a dream. i took it out for a long drive and its once again running great.
I realize that the physical adjustment of the idler cam is the same arm that is moved when you step on the accelerator,so in theory, this could not have been the trouble. mabe it just was a coincidence that it happened to clear up on its own while i was adjusting the idle. Or mabe the repetative cleaning of the fuel elements had something to do with it WHO KNOWS? As for the element nuts that your never supposed to touch,i was lucky to snug them back down with the holder in the excact position they were in to start with.does not seem to have affected the running of the engine(guess i dodged a bullet .)
anyway its running great again for now......thanks for all the help and input

Its good to have a spare pump. I have switched out 616 IPs several times for various problems and never yet found the problem to be with the pump.

That's great news........

I believe diesels tend to get a "fur ball" stuck once in a while. Once they get things running through them again, they "hack it up" on their own and start purring again.

Sometimes I think they just want us to fuss over them a little.

Good news indeed. Perhaps it is a good ideal to add a little system cleaner from time to time just so too much stuff does not get built up. Injection systems just do not appreciate dirt in general.
