Question Mis-matched locks - Can I rekey?

Okay, don't know how I missed this one but just discovered that the ignition key in the '82 300D doesn't fit anything else and I've just got the ignition key.

So, since the search feature here yielded nothing useful I put it to y'all: Do I need to rustle up a set of cylinders or can a locksmith make a key for the doors/trunk and the ignition to match?

I know you can order a new ignition that matches your vin from the dealer. I think this runs about $250ish, well for my W126 with an alarm at least. Vin matching door handle/locks can also be ordered.

Or you can go the junk yard route.

Having two keys isn't to bad, SD has two kind of getting used to it.

Start by ordering a key from a dealer with your VIN and see what that gets you. Assuming the key fits everything except your ignition, a decent locksmith should be able to reset the ignition tumbler, yes. If you can't find one, you can order a new ignition tumbler with your VIN, assuming that turns out to be the lock that isn't original.

Yeah, otherwise it'll show up alongside a grove crew with spinners and headliner fringe with Mariachi blarin' from the Blaupunkt.

You get a key with the tumbler when you order a VIN tumbler, at least that was my surprise from the dealer. $135 total I believe (not installed).
