Learned something about coolant today...

A few years ago I changed from standard green coolant over to the orange stuff. Well, today I had some over heating issues. As we started pulling hoses and pulling the thermostat my 2 diesel mechanic sons start chewing me out. Apparantly, when the orange stuff gets old, it breaks down and turns into mud the likes of which I'd never seen before. Even with the thermostat out, the car runs too hot, telling me that I have this brownish goo all throughtout the cooling system.

Now, the orange stuff is probaly great if you keep to a good maintenance schedule and flush it every year or 2. But if your the forgetful sort like me, you may want to think twice. Looks like I have at least 3 cooling systems to drain and flush.

That's your problem, the MB coolant is a pee/light yellow color. The orange "extended life" DexCool junk is just that, junk.

Dexcool will do that, thats why its junk. You would probably be better off with the green stuff.

Notice the Google ad at the bottom of the page says "Dexcool investigation"? My moms Olds has had it since say one and still has all the original cooling system parts. We must be lucky.

well of course

running a benz without the stat it will overheat.

that is a bypass stat and with it out completely most of your water will bypass the radiator. it will go from the block to the pump and back to the block. so flush it well and put your stat back in after testing it or better yet put in a new one. behr i think is the preferred brand. 80 degree stat.

good luck

That also happens when Dexcool is mixed with the older type coolant. In some cases, it is important to completely eliminate the old coolant prior to changing coolant types. (A thorough flush is never a bad idea, but in some cases is essential.)

You beat me to the punch there....this or worse can happen when you mix incompatioble types without a thorough flush.

Deathcool turns to mud even in GM cars which have never had any other kind of coolant. I can't believe they still make that krap.

Why are you towing horse trailers with you MB??

Maybe I missed something, but MB coolant is NOT orange. It looks more like watered down ice tea.

Jerry said he was pulling hoses, not horses!!!

And who said MB coolant was orange, anyway? I'm guessing that what you have been drinking was not iced tea!!!

Was it an orange consonant, or a green consonant?

Just don't let the horses drink coolant!!!

so, since dexcool is now death cool to me, what do I do?
My mom has a 04 grand prix that she wants to drive into the ground (at the slowest rate possible)... Its going for a 50k service this summer(all fluids, all filters, hoses, T-STAT, new belts, new tires, new misilanious interior crap ((TKS GM))...)

Should I have them change the coolant type? or can I just do a flush and refill to save some $$ ?
