My first oil analysis at 128K and all looked good
OK, I admit it, I was skeptical of doing an oil analysis but did it anyway. It's interesting to see the results. My '98 passed with flying colors. This is the result after 6,000 miles. Basically I changed the oil (M1 5W40 Truck/SUV) at half the interval recommended by the FSS (FSS said I could still go 6,000 more miles) and Blackstone seemed to concur that this oil still could go much longer. I'm not convinced I would ever go 12K miles between changes but it is good to know that I can stretch it to 8K next time and see what additional "contaminants" exist. Since I've only owned the car for a year and put about 15K of the 128K on it it's nice to know that the first 115K apparently were well cared for, as I had suspected, since the engine appears to be in "near new" condition even after all these miles.

Where can you get one done at a reasonable rate?

They did mine for $20.00. Contact them and they'll send you a kit to collect a "specimen".

I don't know how you figure you can extend your oil change interval without doing a TBN test.

An oil analysis without TBN results is incomplete. However, in my experience I have learned that with most sythetic oils, the insolubles % reaches the maximum acceptable level way before the TBN falls below the minimum level in diesel engines.
