One of your cars should be the "Exxon Valdriz". It's just mandatory.

My SD is Liesel, as in "Liesel the Diesel". It also irks a friend named Liesel, who I enjoy irritating when I can.

Hi,
My name is Chris and I am not into Wagnerian opera or any other opera.
I don't think I have a problem.

My 84 300d euro will be referred to as the Vegaholic when I get the convertion completed. I just recieved the filter this week.
Get a life!
I do not see where I said anyone had a problem.
Live and let live. Your business is your business.
It was a spoof, I KNOW there are few opera fans; even less who might be conversant in the Wagnerian characters. More is the pity.

Too bad what passes for education these days is simply job training. True education is more vast in its bredth; allowing creative people to pull ideas from a variety of disciplines and apply them in a new way.

MTU:

Certainly did not mean to offend you. In addition to having fun naming the
car, it also has a utilitarian purpose, if, like in my family, you have more than
one (we have 3) 240D's, and you want to refer to it in conversation.

Some people have boats, and give them names...

Kinda agree here, I don't know naming a car like a dog or even a boat, ehh it just doesn't sound right. To each their own I guess.

Talking

I have had the pleasure of owning several very good vehicles. Until the purchase of my MB, I had only given a name to one of them. For some reason the name fit the car and it has stuck. Usually we just refer to our car as "the pickup", "the little black pickup", etc. I think you get the picture, so I guess we all name our cars, not with a proper name, but with a way to identify it. For some reason, after reading this thread, and looking over the forum, the name I chose for "Fritz" has more than one meaning.
Anyway, to each his own. I spend 10 hours or more a week in my car, and I like to call him by name.

I've only had one car that had a name. My first car was my grandad's navy blye AMC Hornet stationwagon. A nerd car for sure, but it held me and 8 of my friends and had a folding back seat. . .(need I say more?).
We lived in Ohio and the winters in the 70s-80s were much more snowy than they seem to be now, requiring loads of salt. When he would see a bit of rust he would sand the spot, put a dot of tar on it to keep the rust from spreading and spray paint the spot with blue. Never the same color blue.
He had the car for 10 years or so, so you can bet that 10 winters made lots of blue spots. My friends said it looked like fish scales and named the car 'The Fishmobile', or Fish for short. She caught fire from a fuel leak on my HS graduation day, may she Rest In Peace. Lots of great memories in that car.
Since then i've tried naming my other cars but it never seems quite right.

That's my story.

Condi

Came to me in a dream. I was home from work with a mild case of the flu. I decided to utilize the time to replace my fan belts. They were Continentals and listed on the reciept as "conti". When I finished the job I went in and took a somewhat feverish nap. I had these dreams in which I was refering to the car as "Condi".

P.S. Long time reader, first post. Most of my questions have been answered by reading posts. Great site!

Hey William,
That boat you blast around in have a name?

I think it's kinda fun to name these old things. I don't feel the same about my pickups, or the wife's van, but it seems OK for these old cars. I can't explain why.
The smoking wagon started as "The Silver Flash", as it was slower than a 240 with auto tranny. We shortened it to "The Flash" as time went by, and a certain fondness for the car was translated through that.
You can't force a name, though. The white wagon has just become "The white car". That is just what we call it.
Now MS, I'm sorry if I'm one of the ones that caused your apparent angst. I was just busting knads good naturedly, and hope you take it that way.

Willie the krout can

I went to the tire store to purchase some "new shoes" for my 240D. I told the girl that is the service writer my name and so on, when they were done
the service ticket said Willie not Roy. I thought the name fit. And the first time I picked up my daughter in it my wife said "Another krout can!",my wife likes those slant-eyed rice-slinging jap-scraps. And thats how Willie the krout can got his name.

Well naming a boat is a bit different. They are "she" and if you spend enough time on one you will refer to her like she is a living being.

Talked to many global sailors who talk about their boats like their wifes and kids.

Thumbs up New name for the Tractor?

That is a great name. I actually like it better than Tractor...

However, it would be lost on most people out in Kalifornia, as Exxon no
longer has stations. Notwithstanding that, I like it.

Whats the chance

I don't name my cars either but my wife always has. I thought I would like to name these if the right name came along one day....Tonight was that night oddly enough. I drove a whole bunch of freinds (3 and a wife) in my 115 300D tonight to dinner and on the way back after dropping them off I noticed I got my suspension and power back. I said "Stella got her groove back" as she is an awesome car to drive.

So Stella is now her name...I think I will morph an adjective on there and call her Stellar Stella as she is truely a Stellar vehicle.

I know Condi is a she, like most older Benz's.
She likes attention, and loves it when you spend a lot of money on her!!

I did not name my first car, but my mom sorta named it and it stuck. Now, whenever we talk about my (long gone) 1964 Falcon Sprint convertible with a V8 and 4 speed, its " Damn Car". Back in the late early 70's when I was dating my wife, sometimes I would be late picking her up. She'd call the house to see what was wrong, and my mom would answer her question with a " Damn Car!". Meaning I was late becasue something needed to be fixed before I left.

my first

car the simca was albert. it was just perfect.

seldom have named any since then. and the last ten years when i have tended to have a flock of old benzes have just called them "the silver car" the black car, etc. i always tend to think of my benzes as a generic "otto".

my youngest daughter calls my navy 82 300cd "neville". she loves him and preferrs him inexplicably to the newer faster and in better condition "silver car" the 84 500sec.
