190D transmission swap help
Hello all,
I am throwing around the idea of swapping a manual transmission into my 1986 190D. I found that all manuals are the same (gas or diesel) from 1984-1988 used in the 190. A local yard has one with 87,000 miles for $350. I will also need: -pedals. -hydraulics. -shifter + linkage. -flywheel. -prob change driveshaft length. -different length bellhousing bolts? Are the shifter linkages the same between the 190D and E? Do you see any stumbling blocks that would make this not all bolt together? Thanks, John

i dont know from experience
with that model, but based on my experience with 240ds i would hazard a guess that the shift linkage is the same and everything will bolt up.
good luck tom w

i'm gonna do same same swap for my 190D. keep the safety switch from automatic, simply connect the wires together. remove the kickdown switch under the gas pedal. anyway, it's good to have doner car when doing the swap. you'll need bits and pieces aside the manual transmission

Howdy,
OK... now I am serious about this. This morning I picked up a shifter, linkage, pedals, hydraulics, and driveshaft from a 1984 2.3L 190. The yard let me take pics of everything before removal, in addition every bolt and clip came with the parts. The trans was bad, so I cannot use that, and I still need a flywheel. Locally I can get a 5-speed w/64,000 miles for $450 (2.3L). While I was inquiring about this swap a while back I recall reading the flywheel must be the specific to the diesel engine (not a gasser one... is this true?). Would a 2.2L flywheel work? Thanks, John

there is a good chance the fw will bolt up and actually work, but the diesel fw is a lot heavier usually and will smooth out the vibrations of the motor. i advise looking for a diesel fw.

I would really like to nail down this flywheel issue (if a gasser one can be used).
Any more ideas? I suppose I could go to Benz and ask the parts counter to look up and see if the gasser/diesel flywheels are different numbers.

Keep the kickdown switch. Use it to trigger nitrous, propane, and/or water injection.

We have an 87 greymarket 190 with a 4spd that I've been told is similar if not the same as what is in the 240s. I'd love a 5 spd too- so PLEASE POST YOUR PART NUMBERS if you are able to get this to work! Thanks! -John

I picked up a good transmission today!
Now, all that is left is to get a flywheel (still not sure if a gasser one will work) and clutch kit. I searched a few parts sites and it looks like the 2.3 and 2.5 clutch kits are the same. -John

i suggest you ask your mb parts guy what the #s are for the gasser fw and the diesel fw. and ask if they have shipping weight.
iirc the 240 auto fw weighs 18#. the 240 stick fw weighs 28 and the 300d stick fw weighs 38#. i would expect some similar ratios for the 190. perhaps each weight will be less. as i said, i suspect that the gasser fw will bolt up and work but not be as smooth as the lighter gasser fw. good luck tom w
