Car and Driver 116 300SD on eBay

Great description:

Up for auction, a well-running but tired 1980 Mercedes Benz 300SD. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION

This car has been resurrected. It was left to rot in a field, but then I came along and foolishly took it home. First, let me list the good stuff:

It fires inmmediately and runs fine. It was recently driven from Michigan to California nonstop. It'll cruise at 80 mph no problem but takes a LONG time to get there. New stuff includes new front brake rotors, calipers, and pads, new rear shocks, new filters (fuel and air)and belts, new starter, new oil line, and a new battery. Once this thing gets up and moving, it floats down the highway like it's on cotton candy. It was featured in a a story in Car and Driver (April 2006) magazine and that's why you see those stickers on it. Perhaps there's some fame to be enjoyed with this car, but I'll leave that up to you.

Now for THE BAD (this will take a while): It has a power window as only one of the four works and it's real slow. The seat cushions are collpased, but I survived a 37-hour run in the car just fine. The automatic heater control does not work. Our solution was to install a manual valve in the engine-bay heater hose. If you're dextrous, you can operate the valve via a wire that runs into the glovebox. Otherwise we had to get out the car to adjust it. It works out pretty well since there's only two fan speeds, off and full blast and the ducting is stuck in the defroster mode. It does not have A/C. The tires deflate if the car is left sitting for a month and there are major cheapo tires. The AMG body kit looks like it was installed by a four-year old and likewise the paint job could have been applied with a brush. Don't ask about a radio as there is none, the power locks don't work and to open the hood you have to attach a set of pliers to the end of the cable (pliers are included). The speedo works, but the odometer is off and I have no idea how many miles are on it. It shows about 140,000.

As junky as this thing is, it has had two professional mechanics go through it and make it road worthy. Now I'm not saying that this car is anything but a complete beater, but it will probably run for a while (when idling, by the way, the engine sounds like it's eating itself) and provide cheap transportation.

If you have questions, make sure you ask because once this car is gone I never want to see it again. Also winning bidder has to pay for and pick up the car within 7 days of auction end

Kind of sad, actually. A fine automobile turned into a pile of crap.

But, your point is noted........an honest e-bay seller........who would have figured........

Doesn't a guy by the name of Alabassi have a weakness for these types of cars?

They warned in the magazine that it would be on e-bay. Honest yes, but also funny. Some articles are down right hilarious, my favorite was another one of there bonehead ideas to travel cross country in a modified TDI, with a giant additional auxilary tank in the back. Then had them tape the doors shut and go non-stop cross country, without stopping, which they eventually did and had fuel left over!

I've seen worse resurrected.

Oh my 2 bids and the price is now up to.... 56 cents... Somebody has to let us know what happens with this one!

I think that's an AMG steering wheel. Why they put AMG accessories on a diesel is beyond me.

Do not be too harsh. When was the last time yours went across country and back? Also in total darkness it looks as good as a new one. Only 140k miles, it's just getting broken in. Maybe they put in a new radiator for the trip? Underbid for the rad if you need one. If a guy got a list of the new parts installed by those mechanics he might get interested if he had a simular model. Not to worry as someone will buy it and turn up on our site with questions. We may not have heard the last of this gem.

One sucker here

One sucker here, and now the high bidder my 1979 300Sd was murdered by a deer not to long ago and I do I miss it something awful. I thought the pristine 220D I acquired would take away the pain but no luck so it will be my daughter’s first car. W116 cars are starting to get harder to find so if I don’t get a cheap fixer up soon I won’t have any thing to putts at. Oh, god wife and son are going to kill me I hope it goes very cheap we shall see thanks for the tip.

The steering wheel looks like the original but the rim has a cheap aftermarket rubbery cover stretched on.

Well, ForcedInduction, looks like your bid made it through the night anyway. But at the rate of bidding increasing geometrically in 12 hours, from 56 cents to $47.98, that's up something like 8500% in 12 hours. At that rate in a couple of days it WILL BE at $2,484,749,750 with 4 more days of bidding!!!!

So much for the talk of the elusive million mile benz, this could be the........

BILLION dollar BENZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks rust free.....that has to be worth something.

This what i see....

Needs valve adjust & diesel purge.
Some Pool noodle seat padding.
Manual heater & A.C. control kit or tinkering with stock set up.
Good used Window regulators.
Pull off some of that 1980's 'racer boy AMG look alike' crap.
Install Stock American quad headlight assemblies (personal opinion)
A good friend or maaco paint job to get it one color.
A good cleaning.

This car is better than some of the salt belt cars most of us have to deal with.
Do I hear $50.? $50? $50.??? Fifty going once...going twice....
