Congradulations on finishing it successfully. Truth is, most guys (or gals) are afraid to even try. No guts, no glory.

I'll jump back into this thread.

I'm midway thru a similar project.

successfully pulled the engine and transmission last night, only broke one thing, the electrical connector at the very rear of the transmission. the PO and I couldn't find any holes in the block when it threw a rod, but sure enough I found 2 holes, one right below and behind the oil filter area, and another directly under cyl # 5. I'll post pics when I can figure how to shrink them for the forum.

the engine is siezed, and I'm not sure how I'm going to separate them since I can't get to the TC bolts. C

Can I drop the main pan without taking the trans off?

need a couple of tools more to pull that pan, will attempt tonite. I'm going to place the engine on 2 cable spools to allow working on it till I get'em separated, and can put the engine on a stand. then that'll hold it in place while I wrench on those stubborn TC bolts.

am I going to screw any of that stuff up by using an impact gun to dissasemble? I've dissasembled like that before, but never anything that was going to be re-assembled. (working in a junkyard.)

thanks,
Karl

Can the motor/tranny be pulled from underneath. I have found this to be tbe easiest way to pull motors out of Honda's, escorts, and FWD fords. I havenot pulled a RWD motor yet other than in a truck.

I get the car on a lift and drop the Xmember and the motor comes out so nicely, not getting hooked on anything. as it comes out.

Has anybody tried this on the 123's ?

You'll need the blue wrench to remove a W123's front crossmember.

What do you mean but a blue wrench ? Is it a figure of speech or an actual tool

A.K.A. a cutting torch. You cannot unbolt the crossmember.

OK went and took a look at the car just to see for myself.

Is it safe to place a jack underneath that Xmember ?

If the donor car is not going to be used anymore (as in, it's going to the junk yard), you can use a Sawzall between the headlights. This way, you just need to lift the engine/trans. a few inches, and you can roll the car backwards. (this is assuming you removed the radiator and the fan & supports in front of it, along with the bumper)

engine in!

the engine is back in my 85 300SD, maybe will have it running tomorrow. just a couple of things left to do, bolts to torque and whatnot.

I dropped most of the AC compressor bolts and pacers, so I'll have to examine my 300d and hope they're the same.

now to see if my $300 engine is more than a paperweight. cam timing is pretty close, 8 deg I think. timing chain looks beautiful, and no wear on the tensioner. perfect. must have been changed sometime. engine has 270K.
still need to check the IP timing.
