Auto Transmission shifts hard going thru first gear

Hi all,

My '83 MB 300D shifts hard during the first gear shift.

The colder the worse it is.

I've checked the fluid level (its good), replaced the worn vacuum valve levers, and replaced the vacuum dashpot cylinder.

The problem persists.

What other things should I look at before giving up and going to a transmission shop?

Would replacing the AT filter and fluid help?

The car has >354,000 miles on it. I don't know if its the original transmission.

How hard is it shifting? Has it gotten worse lately? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? I'm guessing you have since you've replaced some things.

My understanding is that the vacuum element to the transmission is there to soften the shifts. The harder you are pushing down on the gas pedal, the less vacuum the transmission will have. Therefore shifting into 2nd gear will be clunkier if you have the pedal to the metal than if you are babying it. Higher shifts are designed for less vacuum so that is why they tend to be less clunky than the lower gear shifts. I think downshifts are designed for less vacuum, too.

The first couple of shifts on these cars are notoriously clunky and I would expect them to be more so with the original transmission at this point in time. They are not supposed to make you move violently in the seat, however, so if that is what is happening, something isn't right.

I don't know if fluid could cause your problem or not, but you might as well check the level and the condition of the fluid.

My trans has been clunky too, lately, and this is what I've learned in the last couple days.

How are the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts? You might try checking the modulator valve on the tranny and see if it is holding vacuum. Also check the rest of the vac system. If you don't find any leaks you may just need to adjust the tranny modulator.
