Its no MB but its diesel

I just picked up an '81 VW caddy pu. I found it stored under a shed for the last five yrs. Elderly couple towed it behind their RV so most of the 158K miles are only rolling. Absolutly no rust.
Old man says he always got around 50mpg.

I put a new batt in and it fired right up. Backed it out of the shed, handed over $500 and towed it home 300 miles using the tow bar that came with the deal.

Man these things shake at idle!
Anyone know of a good VW diesel forum as good as this one?

They shake/vibrate at idle when the passenger side engine mount fails.

I was looking into a diesel VW pickup when I started looking for a diesel to run on biodiesel. I ended up with a MB wagon, mostly due to the size. I am glad I went that route cause now my girly and I are a one car family, and a VW pickup wouldn't work. They are great little trucks though, and you can't beat 50mpg.

Tis true, Tis true, I looked at one in Corvallis, Oregon, granted there is an inflated market for diesel in that area. The guy wanted $1700. The interior was trashed, the speedo didn't work, and it was rusty. The truck has less miles than my 79 toyota, and was in far worse shape and he wanted more than twice what I got for my toyota.

I'm still searching for a TD but at least I can drive around cheap now while looking.
I'll check all the mounts. I want to change the fluids, timing belt, hoses... It looks to be easy enough to work on.
Even the AC works! I'm starting to feel guilty. Indeed a rare find.

Yes, change that timing belt!

If the timing belt goes, so do the valves and pistons ...

I don't feel so guilty all the sudden. Found a coolant leak from the head gasket behind the IP. Oh well...

One sold on ebay a few weeks ago for $5300 bucks, but it was very very clean. Had a frontend that looked more like a Scirocco (sp) than a rabbit. Very nice Dan.
I'll keep my eyes open for a TD around here. I'm always looking around for a cheap 240, so I'll just expand my vision....

Failing gasket material...after all these years it's begining to crumble away......
corrosion becomes a problem too, eating the gasket material.

Remove head...machine gasket face.(Belt sander type best, as head has hard pre-chambers in it. ) ...fit a 3 notch head gasket...regardless of what notch gasket was in there.

Set injector timing to 95mm btdc......90mm if you like quieter idling diesels.

Enjoy

It is a little truck--I do not know why they call it a caddy.
