Windshield seal

I'm having the windshield on my coupe replaced through insurance. A friend of mine told me whoever supplies the glass should also supplies the seal. Can this be true?? I think he's thinking about cars without seals that use the butyl sealant in a tube. Any input? Here in FL windshields are totally free with collision/comprehesive ins. Thanks, Paul.

I actually went this morning to have a windshield replaced at Safelite and the gasket was to be included however I got there and they said they couldn't get the gasket so I will find it myself. To reuse the original is not recommended...

Have heard lots of bad reports about using aftermarket seals. I'd get an OE one from the dealer or Fastlane.

I see Phil sells APA brand. Is that OEM? I'd rather not take chances. Thanks, Paul.

Bought one this morning for $151,-; the dealer wanted $170! The good thing is I found a perfect windshield at a junkyard yesterday for $$30,- . Will install it with the help of a friend this afternoon.

I also had a windshield installed in the 82 coupe by Safelite. They use the factory OE seal. It is not included but they only charge $89 for the seal. You do NOT use the old seal at all. I watched 2 pros take the windshield out in about 10 minutes, and it took about 2 hours to install it.

It looks like it would go in easy, but it is a very hard job to get it in right and not leak. I definately would not try it myself. Besides if they break it they get to get another one and they have lifetime warranty on leakage.

I went to Glass Inc. in midtown for a new windsield and seal for one of my 80 300Sd's and three visits later it still leaks like a sieve. I'm about fed up with them and thinking about giving up on it and paying someone else to get it right.

Sounds like you would recommend Safelite.

Ether, I need a windshield for my 300SD. I am in Gwinnett Co. also. Do you have an installer to recommend? Do you recommend buying the seal separately? I thought about taking a seal to the Pull-A-Part glass installer on Buford Highway but after reading your post and others, I am afraid to have it done there.

Thanks
