I found this picture. This is a 1980 (same body style right???)

See it has clear lens instead of the yellow ones.

Before dumping some oil in have a look to see if the drain plug is in it. Have known of cars played with before auctions. Most mb diesel owners check our oil pretty regular so it is strange to be that low. Perhaps oil cooler on side of rad is damaged. Do not start the car without a buddy helping to see if oil is coming out anywhere. After you bring the level up of course. The price you paid is in the ballpark providing that engine was not run out of oil and if the damage is as limited as it appears a really cheap and fast resurection looks possible. The 85 is the year mercedes tried to improve the automatic in the 123 diesel series plus it has a slightly taller rear end ratio to help highway cruising. I am honestly starting to believe these cars are an experience a person should not miss. Body metal from any 1977-85 123 series gas or diesel will fit. Used hood should be really cheap as not much demand I believe and good used grills are plentiful. No big deal but try to find a used hood with a good sound absorbing pad still on it. The odometers are also notorious fibbers on this series as well by the way. I never say one of mine has so many miles instead I just say the odometer says whatever smiles it presently is registerting. This site is great by the way.

Thanks for the info.

So that car up there(post 16) is also a 123?

I would like to have those non-yellow lights.

Sounds like you have fixed up a few cars in your days. I think you will be holding on to this one and we will be seeing you on here much more. She's a bute even with the front smashed in she looks better than 50% of the sedans out there right now. At least the ones roll'n around Portland

Sweet Ride.

Assuming it runs and drives, I'd say you got a good deal.

On american gasoline cars you can pull the distributor and, using a special tool on a drill motor, you can spin the oil pump up to pre lube the entire engine.

I'm very new to MB's, and diesels in general for that matter so I don't know if there is a simillar way to prime the system on your motor. I would assume there must be some way of doing it.

Anyone else know anything about this trick?

If it were a gas motor, I'd pull the sparkplugs squirt a little oil in each cylinder and roll the motor over with the starter until you either see oil pressure on the gauge or oil getting up onto the rockers. (Obviously with the valve cover off) I can't swear to it but I would suspect that pulling the glow plugs and rolling it over would achieve the same pre-oiling as you would on a gas motor.

Good luck either way,

Wayne

You could just fill oil in the crankcase to at least lower level and crank engine with someone holding the manual shutoff on the injection pump. It's labeled. Oil pressure will rise in a few seconds. Release lever then give it a glow cycle and crank it up. Again take extra care there is no oil pouring out of that engine. Hopefully the previous owner just did not care about his car and the oil level was just low. Still not a good sign in itself. As long as you drive one of these the 3K oil change is important as the soot builds up and causes wear. Not changing oil on these engines will probably cost you in the medium term. In fact may be cost effective to change the oil right away instead of adding more. At least you can be forwarned there may be a problem if little comes out. If 5 quarts or so come out then you kind of know the engine is not hurt. This engine holds about 8 quarts by the way. Things I might consider doing but everyone does it there own way. I also like the ideal a very small amount of oil in each cylinder and letting it sit overnight. Again not very much quantity of oil on a diesel though. On a cold engine an oil like motor oil is not as combustable as diesel fuel. So engine should really not start easily during the interval you crank engine to build initial oil pressure. Plus sitting for awhile the oil will work its way down by the rings anyways.

I think the car was well taking care of because it had some bottles of Red Line diesel additive in the trunk. Somebody that does not care about the car would not pay 5 bucks for a buttle.

I towed the car to the shop today. I didn't have time to mess with it but I looked at it some more. The paint is not original but it's the same color as factory.

I went to the MB dealer to get a key $45 smackaroonnies for a plain key !

The worst part is that I have to wait on it. They cant just cut it on the spot like the jap car dealerships I'm use to deal with.

So that'ts it for now, more on the this project when I get the key.

The clear fog lights came on the earlier cars (pre-1980 *i think*). You should be able to find those or swap them with someone who has them. I'm sure some people who own the older cars might want the newer fogs (yellow).
