Just bought a 300D

It's an 85 300D dark blue. What do you think ?

I bought it from an auction. It's slightly tapped in the front. I'm gonna fix it up for my mom, or maybe even keep it for myslef.

Before I tell you how much I paid for it, Can you guyz tell me what that thing is worth ?

I have no clue about MB's and I hope I did not overpay for it.

The car is very very clean for an 85, The interior is flawless except for a crack on the dash. The mileage is 180k miles and I believe it. Even the windshield is original. Maybe even the paint.. It's a clean car, otherwise, I would not even have considered it. The underside is 100% rust free, all seem original including exhaust. This is a Georgia car.

Now I do have a few things I need to do before I start driving it. No key came with it so I will need to get one. Can i go with the title to a MB dealer and get on made ? I also need to find a grill and headlights for the car (I have seen some similar MB's with clear light where the yellow ones are, wich models are those ? are they compatible with this model ?) I might have to get a new hood too. So I will have to hunt down these parts but I dont think it will be such a big deal.

Here are some pics of the car for you guyz.

it looks pretty nice

i suspect it has been painted. the color doesnt look like a benz color, but that is pretty hard to be sure over the internet. you havent heard it run yet? so it is hard to say on the value. if the engine and tranny is junk then it is worth a few hundred as parts. if the engine and tranny are good which it is a good possibility they are, then you have a maybe 3000 dollar car with 2000 damage if done professionally. if you do the work yourself, then it might be 300 in used parts plus the cost of painting the hood if it needs replacing.

so if it is in good running condition with the damage maybe 1000.

The lights you're thinking of are on w116 chassis. I don't think they're interchangeable at all.

As for the key, go to a Benz dealer, they should be able to get you a key for $20 or so.

I'm guessing you need a headlight surround, grille, and hood latch? Except the latch, you could probably find those on eBay easily. Do a search for "mercedes 123" or "merdedes 300D" to look for parts. The 123 search should yield more parts results.

Since this is an 85, not vintage, AND a diesel, I'm moving it to the proper forum.

I will fix it myself, I have rebuilt many wrecked cars and I think this is the least wrecked one I have ever bought.

The color is lighter in person if that means anyhting. It's the original color, that I am pretty sure unless the guy that repainted it put new OEM benz sticker over the new paint. There is a Sticker that says "no catalyst" on the door sill by the vin plate and I gently pulled a corner of it off and its the same paint as the rest of the car. I carefuly looked for overspray or overlay and did not find any, that's why I think it might be oem paint, or a very nicely redone paint.

What's a 123 ? the gas version ?

Also are these good cars ? Are they known to be reliable ?

tomguy i like your sonic pic.

And thats a nice 300D, get a grill from ebay or junk yard cheap and your car will be blingin! nice interior and paint too!

As for the price, $1,000 sounds good for its condition.

W123 is the body style. My 300SD is a W126 body style. reliable???? these things can go up to a million miles!!! (trying to sound like a ebayer)

My dad has a 78 300D has 446K or somewere around their now and still runs like a champ! My friends 81 300SD (same motor as the one in that 300D) has 652K miles! These things are really reliable and can run on used cooking oil too!

youll love the car if you get it!

I wish I could reach to previous owner, i could learn about the car. But another thing thing I noticed is that even the windshield is an OEM benz windshield.

I hope I dont get any surprises when I crank it up. It probably hasnt been cranked up in a few months so should I do something to it before cranking it up ? Might sound like a dumb question but I wanted to ask, better safe than sorry.

I agree, check to make sure it has fluids and such, mainly engine oil, tranny, coolant, etc...probably does, but its always good to check.

Thats a real nice looking car! A little repair work and it will be extremely nice! Congrats on the purchase!
