does a 80 300D really take 8 quarts? the oil is really black i think this is why the car is smoking

The car holds about 7.9 quarts total, but about 7 to 7.5 quarts will usually get it to the midpoint on the dipstick.

The new oil will turn black in a very short time, it's just a diesel thing.

I doubt the condition of the oil will have anything to do with it smoking.

When I did my first few oil changes, I was only able to refill with about six quarts. I found another quart that was sealed in the filter. When you drain, make sure to lift the cover off of the oil filter canister so it'll break the seal and allow the extra to drain. That should get you about seven quarts. I had the same reaction about the color the first time I did an oil change. On my bimmer I could judge when I needed to change it because it would get pretty dark after a couple of months(odo doesn't work). Black oil is natural on these engines.
