I was going to the market for chips and salsa in order to prepare for tomorrow's UCLA game (I'm an alumnus) and made a hard left at an intersection to avoid a long line of approaching traffic. After proceeding, power decreased markedly and sputtered a bit, then caught, and ran normally. I figured I shouldn't have ignored the fuel gauge and warning light for the past week.

Got to the market and figured the nearest diesel station was too far away to be 100% sure of making it. Bought a gallon of Mazola vegetable oil, along with the chips, and poured it in the car at the parking lot. Made it to the station easily, filled up, and the car runs smoothly.

Moral: carry a gallon of corn oil in the trunk.

For all you folks that run WVO...........what's the lowest temperature that you would pour straight vegetable oil into the tank??

I've also got a gallon of oil in the trunk, but, I'm unsure of the lower temperature limit.................

unless you mix it with diesel not below 55 f.

Actually, I think a better moral would be to not let your fuel level get so low.

IMHO- If its straight VO, Id say you would be fine to pour it into your tank as long as its not frozen. IF your engine is hot, and there will be residual diesel in the tank and lines anyway, it would be fine.

I would rather carrry a few gallons of WVO blend w/ RUG. Cheaper and not flammable anymore. 5 gallons fits nicely in the rear wheel well.

If it was clean oil bought from a store, I'd say if its not cloudy pour it in. The 130 degrees he's talking about is the temp one shoots for when they convert their car with some form of kit to run off of WVO. Actually, though, its more around 150-160 degrees.

I'm in SoCal, so temp wasn't an issue. It's spring!!! Poured clear and easy.

Mistel: Since it had "bottom of the tank" diesel fuel still in there, it actually idled a touch rougher.

gatorblue: Las Vegas has the game at ~ 1.5 points. We'll see.

I visited friends and family (half of whom with diesels) who use no more than 25% rape seed oil (canola) straight - no biodiesel processing. Only catch is they can't do it on a CDI or the new(ish) VW systems.

They didn't understand why I don't do the same...in a word - $
After the metric and Euro conversions Germans, at least in Fulda, Hessen, pay ~$5.25 gal. [1.15-1.19 E per liter about a month ago.]
But with EU farm subsidies being as high as they are, canola comes close to the US average for diesel. For those who read this far-- Thanks to Dr. Lars Becker, for a great ride in a small but nice A class CDI.
