i found this under my benz

i found this under my 82 300D turbo it is 1 1/4 inches wide(couldn't find a metric ruler) and about 5/16 of an inch tall. it appears to be a bushing of some type. it is all metal. i could be wrong and this may not be from the car, but i am unsure and wanted to see if anyone has seen this before so i can be sure i'm not wrong. i found it just before i pulled into the garage, i stopped when i saw it and got out to pick it up. i did not notice any difference in the feel of the car as i made a short trip to pick up dinner. if anyone could offer input it would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
Steven Hamilton

Check under your engine shocks and make sure the gromet did not come off.

sorry to sound like a complete noob, but i am for the most part about working on my car, which has been very good to me so far in not many problems, where exactly are the engine shocks if u had a pic that'd be great, because as far as i could tell i couldn't see where anything was missing under the car. i also noticed 2 other things as i was looking under the benz one being in the wheel well and the other on the coolant expansion tank. pictures included.
it seems the hose off the cap of the expansion tank is not connected to anything it is just pinched under the tank, does anyone have any idea why? i have not done any work on the tank and have never noticed this before. and the other picture is in the wheel well it is a taped off wire, again i have no idea why, but would like to fix this immediately unless this is like this for a reason. any input would be greatly appreciated thank all of you.
thank you,
Steven Hamilton

The taped off wire is from your front wheel brake pad sensor, they connect to the pads, then allow electrical grounding when the pads are real worn, which lights up a light on the dash, signaling that you need new pads. If you pay attention to the brakes/pad condition on a "normal" basis then they are essentially not needed at all. On our '83 we opted to not put in new sensors and so its disabled on that car too....my car has them though, only because the dealer did the job for me at the time (before I knew how to do brake-work).

That hose off the expansion tank is the "overflow hose" it only has stuff going through if you fill the tank too full or if the engine/temp is too high and the water boils, thats where excess pressure/water will come out. Generally it serves no purpose...

Here is a picture of the underside of my car, if you look at the left side of the pic, to the left of that tube coming up out of the oil pan (with orange glop on the bottom) that cylinder with the two "indent grooves" on it is the engine shock on the passenger side, the same thing is present on the drivers side. Hope this helps!

WOW pawoSD your oil pan sure is clean!

What year and model is your car?
my pan looks like it could be supplying the oil to the world!
what is the bright orange part near your altenator? also what is the square aluminum part in your lower radiator hose?
awesome clean motor though cool. maybe someday my 82 will get cleaned up that nice.

Yeah, the expansion tank is just there for looks.
And those sensors are just extra bells and whistles so they can charge more.

Are you living in the Australian outback or something?
Holy cow.

If it's broken, fix it.

Thats my favorite fake part to talk about. I'm pretty sure it connects to the rotary throw-out rod.

Mine is a 1982 300SD W126, with 236,000 on it (see sig below)....That bright orange thing is the power coupler for my lower radiator hose "block heater", which is what the aluminum block is....I think its actually steel though, its just really shiny. I only had to use it about 10 times this past winter...but it does help a lot on super cold startups, I used it when it got below 10F outside, worked great, started in 2 cranks on a 7 second glow cycle. Mine can start reliably down to about -10 or so(have several times before)without a heater, but I don't want to strain the engine, so I use a heater when its that cold.

I try to keep the engine fairly clean ....our '83 has a much cleaner looking engine than mine even does....its bone dry!!

i have come to the conclusion its not from my benz

i have come to the conclusion its not from my benz, i couldn't see anything missing or any free bolts. so maybe it came off my sister's jeep cherokee which i just want to i had to change the alternator out a few weeks back, biggest pain in the world if u don't take every bolt and cable off in perfect order. i can only hope its from her car.
thanks to everyone,
Steven Hamilton II
ps. i wish my car was half that clean underneath. thats my project once it warms up.
