85 300SD. 9.5lb boost. Should I mess with it?
Hello
I intalled a boost gauge this morning. Necessity is the mother of invention.. I had enough line to get MOST of the way in to where I wanted to go (under the ashtray) I opted to install the gauge in the glovebox instead. I'm getting 9.5lbs of boost using the brake and 4k RPM method. Should I bother to spend the 30 bucks on a dawes controller to tweak it? Will I see any more performance from the 3lbs of boost? I suppose it is 30% Ideas? Comments? Wild Guesses? JP |

Most say that that last increase in boost will help out your top end (ie. highway driving) My '85 SD is the same way, but I have not bothered changing it yet.
You dont have to spend the money for the dawas boost controller, you can just make your own for $10 in brass fittings/a spring/ and a ball bearing/ and a bolt with lock nut. Google it. |

Or you can just adjust your existing waste gate. If your turbo is a garrett its a major pain. worth it in the end though. If you have a garrett about the max boost you can run is 14.5psi before the compressor starts to loose efficiency.

Yup
It is a garrett.
For the couple bucks.. I'd rather not play with it. So, consensus is get the boost up to 13.5? JP |

Get it up to at least 12 psi.
Once you figure out how to get the Garrett wastegate diaphram housing open its not that big of a deal.

Get a cheap wrench and take a grinder to it.

I bet you get more than 9.5 with the car moving.....trust me I found that out 2 years ago when I got 13 like that but hit 20 psi 50 feet down the road.

Nope
The 9.5 was a one time deal with the brake on at 4k RPM moving.
I drove 30 or 40 miles today. I had a big hill where I just put it to the mat. 9psi.. That's all she pulls. JP |

It seemed to help my '85 quite a bit going from 8psi to 12psi...

Do you experience better fuel economy at 12psi?

Too early to tell at the moment, I'll report back in a week or two. I did many WOT runs to get it adjusted properly so my average economy is for sure down.
