Newbe needs info

Could someone direct me to a source to decypher the engine codes of different models. The VIN eighth digit may be A, C, D, or E, but the posts
here reference 601, 602, 606 etc.
I'm trying to gain enough info to find and buy a late 80's/early 90's turbo-
diesel sedan.
I have learned lots by reading here but engine type/power/reliablity still
eludes me.

Do a search on "SDL" and "617". Check "2.5" and "2.2" also.
