I wish every new owner of these engines would perform simple maintenance of the valves and replace the glow plugs. Their starting issues would vanish overnight in most cases.

In the case of this SD, new valves allow it to start at 12°F. after about 1/2 second of cranking. It never smokes.

I wasn't "tuned in" earlier or I would have also probably added some support, and I hope your wife is better.

There are a few things that can make a diesel owner happy in addition to lashing the valves after they have been neglected and tightened up. One is tweaking the ALDA and the other is setting the valve/IP timing.
Have you attended to these things? I forgot to look for the mileage on your car, that I should have done but its been my experience that even under 200K timing chain stretch (wear really) can lower performance and it happens so slowly that one will never notice it. Then after setting it right you will ask yourself why you didn't do it before!
As for the regulators, how do you know the ones your going to install aren't also fatigued? The pot metal they cast these out of slowly bends over time, especially if you raise the window hard against the stop and leave it there. I was told to lower the window a slight amount (not enough to see light) after it reaches the limit, that will help the regulator last longer.
You may want to put a new regulator in the window you use the most, usually the drivers side in my experience or the R Rear is the next most used window. I hate changing those and pay a friend, a Polish trained MB mechanic with small hands and a lot of patience to do that work, I don't have those attributes :(

Perfect time to pop and properly lubricate all the little ball and socket fittings with the proper stuff. Just so you know they aren't dry.
