Wow, according to the MBUSA site, the base price is $51,825. Back when mine was new, about the only option was leather interior.

Smile Thanks

I appreciate all of the inputs -- as usual with this forum, much more than I expected.

csp97 -- Autotrader.com was the web site I couldn't remember, thanks.

92300SE -- Good point on 1985 being a transition year with big discounts to move out the dogs, I hadn't thought about that. As always, what the dealer sells the car for doesn't always bear a whole lot of resemblance to MSRP. Depends on who's hungry!

Phil -- I'm just north of you, out in the weeds east of Mr. Rohnert's Seed Farm . I let John at Autokraft go over the car one time since I am wrenching on a learner's permit, so to speak, diesel and Mercedes-wise, but I plan to do as much of my own work as I can. I've already had the dash apart and must do so again to resolder the brain of my cruise control (let's hope it works, I don't wanna spring for a rebuild if I don't have to). The cc acts as if it wants to work but it is flakey, cutting in and out and making the driving experience somewhat nervewracking. A cracked pc board in the brain is right up my alley as far as an easy fix. Keep your fingers and toes crossed!

That makes me wonder - was ABS not optional even in 1984-85 on the 84-85 300D? I do not recall ever seeing them with ABS. It was optional however on the 1984-85 300SD and 380SE, as well as the 84' 500SEL and 500SEC, but was made standard on the 500SEL/SEC for 1985 (as well as standard airbag) and across the board in 1986.

I am not to sure about the options on these cars. I know two that my car has - ABS brakes and memory power seats. Airbag and leather was also optional in 84-85 on these cars, but not sure what all else.

Options

I don't think ABS was available on the 300D until after 1985, even as an option. There is no mention of ABS in my 1985 300D owner's manual. The only options I am aware of were (a) leather seats and (b) heated seats. We need input from the more knowledgeable concerning sunroofs, heated rear windows, air conditioning, etc. My owner's manual also mentions an alarm system.

While on options, does anybody have or used an MB phone in a W123? I know there is a cable for it in all the W123's I've seen.

Sure, but I have seen quite a few with stickers for $4k over that. An E500 is agbout $65k-$66k, start ticking off the options to load a CDI up like a 500 and you will pass $60k pretty fast.

But remember cars don't sell for sticker. Last year models are usually market right down. Like 85 my W123, W126's were probably leaving the lot for thousands off sticker.

Depends on the car and the year. I remember some euro cars actually selling above sticker in the early 80s. At the time my girlfriend bought a brand new BMW 320i (1981, I think) and, as I recall, the dealer was selling them at sticker plus all kinds of mark-ups. If you recall, that was before decent asian cars, and US cars were at their worst.

Talking Overpriced and selling hot

Yes, during the Arab oil embargo of the early 1980s, the VW Rabbit diesel was a hot seller. Several of my co-workers at National Semi were absolutely panting to get one. They were chasing all over the [San Francisco] Bay Area and out into the Central Valley to Stockton and where-ever, trying to find a dealer who would sell them a 'diesel bunny.' They ended up paying several thousand dollars extra, as I recall.

Hey Jeremy
I've been wrenching on my MB for going on two years now and other cars before so if I can help in any way ( pointing things out or whatever let me know). I know ara T is in our area also, were starting to get enough for a GTG. I seem to have Screech Owls around me, very noisy at night.

Appreciate the offer of help, Phil

I am new to M-B and diesel (except for my garden tractor) and have a lot to learn. At least there are a lot of great people on this forum to set me straight.

Barn Owls screech (and click); Screech Owls don't. Seriously. Go figure. Someone named them wrong, I guess.

I guess their Barn Owls then. Anyway thes cars seem to have been built with the idea that some one would be working on them someday so a lot of stuff is not hard to do.
