1980 300D Buy?
My friend's family is parting with their 300D. I've been considering buying it but don't know what's a good price. It has 160,000 miles, about 50K on an engine and tranny rebuild and drives well (I didn't get to drive it today.. funny story really. Friend drove it to work but now the ignition is stuck.. had to tow it back home). I just saw it today and it's in decent shape for a nearly 30 year old car. The paint is horrible.. It's originally a Burgundy color.. anybody know the official name? Now it's all faded and matted and is the color of rust.. Don't think it'll buff out.. probably needs a paint job, The interior is nice. A couple wood pieces are off but can be glued back.. No wood on the center console.. was there supposed to be? some cracking on the dash, stereo doesn't work, some cracking in the B-pillar vinyl. sunroof works but can't be retracted all the way.
Underneath didn't see any rust.. CA car, The left headlight assembly has a crack in it which has allowed moisture to accumulate leading to algae buildup but the lights themselves are fine, The engine bay/block looks pretty dirty compared to all the pretty Ebay pictures I see.. but it's old. Everything looks like it should suit my needs for a WVO conversion just fine.. I just don't want to be bogged down with too much of a money pit. They want to sell it for 700 bucks.. Keep in mind these are very good friends of mine. Rich |

$700 sounds good to me. If you don't want to spend a bunch of money, just drive it the way it is, and fix the little things that are free, or next to free, and any of the major things that do need attention.

Strange, do you know why the engine and tranny were rebuilt at only 100K miles. Also, do you know what they mean by a "rebuild"? Based on your description, this does not sound like a well maintained car, but what do you expect for $700. It depends what you want to do with it. If you are expecting reliable transportation, you will probably have some work to do. On the other hand, if you are just willing to drive it and fix things as they break, you may get your money's worth. Just don't hold it against your friends if it turns out to be junk.

Thanks for the replies everyone.. I'm not sure why the rebuild at such a young "age".. I'll find out why it was rebuilt. Does anyone know the name of the color. It's sort of a burgundy color. I'd like to get it repainted if I get it. I wish I took pictures but I didn't have enough juice in the camera... I'll try and get some when I check it out this weekend.
