Worn Deferential? 86 190D

I believe the 190D (145,000 miles) I just bought has a worn deferential. Here the symptoms:
1. On movement only, inc when in neutral
2. NOT worse with accel/heavy load
3. noticeable when slow not a problem at high speed
4. Had jacked up on hoist, prop shaft, cv joints and wheel bearings seem ok, not really possible to locate noise or problem
5. moderate play in the whole drive train (say 15o slack)
6. applying breaks makes no difference
7. no difference when cornering

The person I purchased the car from did not notice the sound till I pointed it out when I test drove it, which leads me to believe that they became used to the wine as it would come on very gradually.

2 Questions.
Overall the car was well maintained and runs fantastic; is this anything I need to address immediately? I may take a moderately long trip in the fall (1200 miles round trip) otherwise only local driving.

What would be a likely range I could expect to pay if I pull it out and have it rebuilt?

Ive had some luck with changing out the fluid and using 50-50 blend of lucas oil stabilizer and 80/90 weight gear oil on cars other than benz's.

Once you are sure it is the rear end I would first try the above posts ideal. It does sound reasonable. If not satisfactory you can try to pick carefully a used complete differential at an auto wreckers. A rebuild on that particular rear end is possibly a larger bill than you want to think about. But you can price that as well of course. Get a garantee that the used replacement is not howling or if so it can be returned. The lucas oil thickner has replaced the stuffing of sawdust in by used car dealers years ago. Guess things change with time.

Our '83 has a very worn differential, so I refilled it with Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil, cut the whirring sound by about 80%, still clunks though...lots of play in the gears...
