Insurance is lot like women....can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em! I think the big rip is liablity insurance on multiple cars....you can only drive one at a time! Liability insurance should cover the driver in whatever car he/she happens to be driving....insure the driver not the car. I can see seperate replacement/repair insurance on each car itself and the cost based on the car itself.

Shop around, keep your driving record clean, take the defensive drivers course, combine home/personel/auto insurance coverage and keep shopping around. I've been with same company for 9 years, every year it's "we have to slightly raise your rates"....every year I hand him a new quote for the same coverage, for less money....meet it, beat it, or say goodbye! Don't tell "your agent" you have a better deal, get it in writing and SHOW HIM....now, does he want to make part of something or all of nothing!

BTW...can't you waive off the auto glass replacement clause? (that sounds like some law maker has a chain of glass shops! Bet your state has high auto glass replacement costs too...why not, you gotta do it and the insurance company pays for it with your money. I just love a good law that "helps" everybody!)

I agree with Ralph, do some shopping around. I ran into this several years ago, with State Farm I believe, found that Prudential would do the exact same coverage for two cars as State Farm wanted for one. If I recall, it doesn't have much to do with the "brand" of insurance but depends on the underwriters in your area. In fact, it might be a good idea to shop around every time you renew.

I agree with Brian on the coverages. Beware of "discount" coverage that would literally leave you with next to nothing if something major happened and you couldn't work. The main thing I want to cover is me as sole breadwinner. The car is a thing that can be replaced. It is a good idea to see what all of your policies cover.

If you have full ride insurance on a "main vehicle" the classic 1983 300sd cost me a whopping 70.00$/YEAR from Grundys. Yep, even right here on the island of long rip off, where the insurance game is run by (as Brian say's) Ben Dover, et.al.
There are a couple of classic car insurance agencies. I found Grundy to be the best with unlimited milage and useage of the car.

OK, Joe.......cough it up.......where do I find this killer deal?

I tried one of those companies and you could NOT drive the vehicle with any destination in mind other than an auto show........amazing.

ok guys

i just went to Grundy and they do quote insurance for about 100 bucks per year but they are quoting as a collector car that you barely drive... you still have to have a primary car with somebody like allstate... although it looks like a great deal...

The prices are good. What are the exact restrictions on the use of the vehicle?

Can you drive it whenever and wherever you wish......provided you stay below the mileage limit?

I have to call them...........I could easily put two of them on such a program...........

I called them and spoke to a knowledgeable agent.

No coverage for the use of the vehicle to or from work.

No coverage for the use of the vehicle on local errands or daily activities.

No coverage for taking the vehicle on a trip overnight away from it's home garage........unless going to or from an auto show.

The sent me an e-mail in confirmation:

Dear Mr. Carlton:

Thank you for contacting GRUNDY WORLDWIDE's web site. Unfortunately, we are
unable to insure vehicles that are used for errands and backup
transportation. A 1986 Mercedes Benz 300 does not qualify for our program at
this time. We wish you the best in finding the appropriate coverage for this
vehicle.

Respectfully,

GRUNDY WORLDWIDE

Effectively, you can't use the vehicle whatsoever........unless you take it on a local drive to nowhere and return it to it's garage in the evening.

The whole program is typical BS. They lure you into it, but won't cover you down the road.

Be careful if you choose this route.......the exclusions will bankrupt you.

It's a long shot perhaps. They used to and maybe still do sell a drivers policy. Whatever car you are driving is automatically insured by them. Was a good thing for multiple car owners and perhaps someone with a lot more knowlledge about auto insurance than myself could comment. Primary coverage for a millon or two plus the extra passenger ryder clause whatever it is called was about 300.00 a year for me until the wife totalled the jetta. Now it is up to 840.00 a year as the accident was ruled her fault. Add on cars are quite cheap. Even in canada for those people that live near major population centres they bend you over before giving you the rate.

At least you guys don't live in New Jersey. I couldn't even get my license until I was 21 due to the insurance costs. It was $900 for minimum liability for 6 months!!!! It was a 5.0 Mustang but even still....

As companies go, I have always liked State Farm. When I was burglarized in college my parents' agent covered that under their homeowner's policy, even though I was clearly not technically covered.

Now as far as being covered for only driving to/from auto shows...if you don't drive a certain vehicle all that much, couldn't you justify occasional driving by saying it's bad to let a car sit around too long?

A 5.0 Stang or a 560SEC would have run me $3k per year when I was getting quotes a couple of years ago. Insurance is very expensive.

I have to say though the glass coverage is pretty nice. I have only used it once but it was cake and I got a nice new windsheild!

Brian those collector car policy's are more for a 300SL that gets driven around on the weekends once a month and goes to a couple of shows a year.

Sure you can get them to issue you a policy. The real question is whether you can get them to pay if you have a "problem".
