ULSD has been available at ARCO stations throughout California since 2002. It has not been a problem as additives are added to increase lubricity. I have used it off and on when their prices are good and did not notice any difference.

I can safely say that I couldn't care less.

I have my doubts that LSD will have any affect on our IP's. Back to more important things.

I agree, as usual we are getting concerned over non-issues.

I work in one of Valero's refineries. The EPA will require ULSD on June 1 at the refinery level. The requirements at the gas station level will be later but the sulfur should start coming down at the gas stations starting in June. It will take a while for the whole distribution system to blend down. The lubricity will be lower without the sulfur. We've set up for adding lubricity additive in order to meet the lubricity specs.

I would expect lubricity to be somewhat less than today just due to the fact that the lubricity additive is expensive and refiners will be putting in just enough to meet the spec compared to todays diesel which easily exceeds lubricity spec.

Yeah they have it in an oakland BP/arco station, we tried it in the passat and saw no difference in performance but it idle rougher then on regular diesel fuel. This was before we got the biodiesel processor running now that we have it running the rough idle and bad exhaust smell is all gone

There is a Suncor refinery down the street from where I work. Two months ago they closed down most of their production for a week to convert all the systems for ULSD production.

From http://www.suncor.com/default.aspx?ID=2052
" Suncor Energy gives green light for major investment in Denver refinery

All financial figures are approximate and in US$
Denver, Colo. – (August 2, 2004) Suncor Energy (U.S.A.) Inc. today announced that it will begin construction on a $300 million project to modify the company’s Denver refinery, located in Commerce City, Colorado.

The modifications are planned to meet environmental regulations that will limit sulfur levels in on-road diesel fuel to no more than 15 parts per million by June 1, 2006. At the same time, the investment is expected to allow Suncor to process larger volumes of crude blends from the company’s Canadian oil sands operations, providing a secure, long-term supply for the refinery and a stable supply of refined products to the Colorado market.

"This investment confirms Suncor’s commitment to building our Denver operations as a key component of the company’s long term strategy," says Mike Ashar, executive vice president. On completion of the project, Suncor expects to integrate 10,000 to 15,000 barrels per day of oil sands sour crude into the refinery, and will also increase the refinery’s capacity to process bitumen used in asphalt production.

With site preparation finished, work begins immediately and is planned to be complete by early 2006. Plans include an engineering staff of nearly 200 to work on project design and a peak construction workforce of approximately 600. About 75 per cent of the project budget is expected to be spent purchasing goods and services from Colorado-based businesses.

Through the preliminary engineering and regulatory approval phases of the project, Suncor consulted with stakeholders in an effort to support regional economic benefits and minimize environmental impacts during project design and construction.

"Being a good neighbor and a respected part of the Colorado community is very important to Suncor," said Ashar.

The announced investment coincides with the one-year anniversary of Suncor’s purchase of the Denver refinery, Denver-area Phillips 66 stations and pipeline assets in Colorado and Wyoming. Suncor employs approximately 620 people in its U.S. business, including 240 at the refinery.

Capital cost estimates are based on engineering currently completed. Actual amounts may differ and the difference may be material.

Suncor Energy U.S.A. Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suncor Energy Inc., an integrated energy company based in Calgary, Canada. Suncor Energy U.S.A.’s business includes refining operations and retail sales in the Denver area under the Phillips 66 brand, and pipeline operations in Colorado and Wyoming."
